If Putin is using it, it would be too explain to us all how Poland started WWII by being so mean to Herr Hitler and not doing something he kindly asked them to do... poor old Hitler was forced to attack you see. Gee, kinda like how Putin was forced to invade and punish Ukraine. Ah, it all makes so much sense... :^(

Alternate realities are best left to science fiction.

There are two 'strong leader' people you can safely expect nothing straight from and they come out under the word 'Truth' ala Orwell (one is the Russian word for it, Pravda). Do I need to read Mousey Tongue's little book to know how many millions of 'his' people starved to death because of him?

Putin has been ahead of the curve in abusing social media to erode the grip
of legacy media and the general notion of objective truth or shared reality.

His single narrative of Poland being responsible for Hitler’s invasion of
Poland is just one tiny thread in his overall “firehose of bullshit.”

All strong man authoritarian leaders need chaos within which to grip the
hearts and minds of their followers. Social media operates as if it leaped
from the id of Joseph Goebbels himself.

I remember a decade plus early on of people saying the internet must never be regulated (or 'censored' as they see it, kind of like socialism always equates to communism for some). It seems we have to learn the hard way yet again, partly about what constitutes public space... airwaves... bandwidth... even drinking water and air. Traffic lights are telling people what they can and can't do, so they should go next! But then when all government is 'evil' where can you go from there anyway? Individual arms races probably.

I never had a Twitter account, and especially have no desire to sign up for X since Musk has turned in right-wing centric.

Like the right-wing assholes needed another place to post, when they have Truth (HAH!), most of the people who post replies on Yahoo are either conservatives, trolls or Russians posing as Americans, and they have Fox News, their propaganda machine posing as news.

Musk is definitely a bad actor, but most of all he's just a moron.

I came to the realization a couple of years ago, and it was a very, very unpopular position at the time (the old "yeah, tell us all about how the genius behind Tesla and SpaceX is an idiot, what have you done since you're so smart?" argument).

Now people are more open to it, but he still has a passionate crowd invested on him being a genius. Rian Johnson made the Knives Out sequel entirely about this.

Him being a moron doesn't mean he isn't very dangerous, though. He is compromised by the Chinese government (Tesla reasons) and by the Saudis and Russians, by reasons that are less clear.

And he doesn't seem to mind tanking Twitter (yeah, I'm still calling it that) in order to achieve his nebulous goals.

I know all of this sounds like conspiracy talk, but hey some of them are real you know.

On the changes on the platform, the "For You" tab seems to mimic the (also very dangerous) TikTok algorithm, which exposes kids to all kinds of stuff you wouldn't want them exposed to.

You can switch back to the old Twitter algorithm still, and that will give you a more similar experience to "Old Twitter", except for some terrible ads and sponsored posts.

The anti-semite slur against Musk seems to be unfounded and political/economic due to his ad dispute with the Anti-defamation League.

He has no legitimate “dispute” with the Anti-defamation league.

His scape-goating them for the negative impact on advertising, actually brought on by his own policy for making Twitter safer for Nazis, is part of the large body of evidence that he is, indeed, an Anti-Semite.

Lots of examples are in his own words. Musk responds to posts, like one that said Jewish communities “have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.”— Musk’s response? ““You have said the actual truth.”

This kind of bullshit from him is reported on all the time. Defending him now is to go along with his “who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?” defense. His anti-semitism is not in legitimate doubt anymore. Though he is currently in “damage control” mode, it won’t last.

Thanks Mark.  I love and admire most Jews people (deeply), but I do not agree with your opinion (however strongly stated) that Musk is an anti-semite.

I do have my doubts about the ADL as having morphed into something it originally was not.

Setting aside my opinion, I would be fascinated to hear any argument for how a man who posts in the clearest terms possible that he believes Jews promote hate is not an anti-Semite.

Not only did Musk call that "the actual truth", in subsequent posts, he expounded on his views. He wrote that he does not believe hatred of White people extends “to all Jewish communities" but he singled out the Anti-Defamation League for promoting racism against White people.

Now you echo Musk cryptically with some kind of defense involving "doubts" about the ADL since it has "morphed"?

It all sounds very sneaky!

And while Musk and X fail to enforce their own rules or take effective action against the spiking anti-Semitism on their platform, Musk defends himself behind the nonsensical positoin that he is “pro free speech, but against anti-Semitism of any kind.” ....Rrrright. So that's why he brought his Hitler loving friend Kanye West back to Twitter. To Musk, dealing with anti-Semitism on X means that "antisemitic posts should not be deplatformed, but should instead be met with “counterpoints.” Otherwise, anti-Semites are “just going to be hidden antisemites, and that’s not going to do. That’s perhaps worse.”

He's all for free-speech, we are to understand. It would be "worse" to know anti-Semites exist, but not hear their views and it would be better to broadcast them, affirm them with supportive tweets, and then attack the Anti-Defamation League with slanderous accusations that they are responsible for ruining Twitter's reputation with advertisers.

It's absolute-free-speech, except when it comes to those ADL people (whatever religious persuasion they turn out to be). Because the ADL actually promotes hate and racism... against "white" people! According to Musk, free speech should not be curtailed under any circumstance... unless it promotes racism... against "whites"!

Eff that guy.

Quite the non-anti-Semite.

As a Jew myself, two points:

1) Musk's personal behavior is at the lower end of the antisemitic spectrum, but is far worse because of its scope and influence AND control of one of the world's largest social media platforms.  And when I say 'lower end', it's fascinating and a little depressing to watch people keep moving the line of what they consider antisemitism in a way that allows them to keep... saying... eeeevvvvverrr... so slightly 'edgier' stuff.

2) The whole issue of Jews being white or not white is FUCKING EXHAUSTING and is one or the other depending on who's got the talking stick. We're white Europeans when a semantic argument is being made against Israeli legitimacy, and we're most definitively not white when non-Jewish white people are discussing us.  It's super-fun, thanks for asking.

Canada takes a lot of stick for being a 'nannytopia', aka over-regulated, but I see anti-semitism taken very seriously here. Most times when there is an incident it is connected to hate-mongering crapola on a site or in some other form from outside the country pretty directly. We are getting more selective regarding the internet and foreign stations/publishers putting out deliberate false information that is harmful but could be moving farther on it still. Some people really have dumbed free speech down to practically everything and anything goes, maybe people who are never among blamed and/or hated groups, but civilization = rules, and surely after a couple thousand years, or even just a hundred and fifty, we can have learned something!

Over my dead body is as extreme and absolute as I get... I would rather die than live in a world where I wouldn't stand up against hate-mongers, which is not freedom, it is to live in fear. I sometimes do see people choosing insanely to live in fear ultimately rather than stand up, by backing yet another inflated personality cult strongman or guru. The U.S. professed to be a light on a hill and so I am 'with' my neighbor to the hilt on that, but if a Condoleeza Rice never 'forgives' us for not joining in the Iraq invasion over bogus WMDs, it's just more whining from the folks who used to say they were against whiners. Walk the walk, less talk please. Exhausting indeed, we've never heard so much double-talk and weaseling out of reality go on for so long, wah wah wah. Musk is in no way a 'regular guy' nor on anyone's side but his own, he's made that pretty clear, and incapable of having real friends the fools who think they can be his may find themselves under a bus next time around. Should've stuck with making vehicles, like Henry Ford should have, and not think he magically knows everything about everything else. A genuinely wise person has a grasp on what they don't and even can't know.
