Zeck was a masterful cover artist. I don't think I've ever read an issue of GI Joe and even I admire his Snake Eyes and Stormshadow.

Nick Cardy has a good run of Superman covers back in the day.

Any era where covers best represent what's in the comic. Nowadays, covers are really just portfolio pieces. You've got Peter Parker as Spider-Man randomly swinging somewhere. Whereas they used to give you a much better idea of what you were getting. Perhaps because we're not getting much these days. And the best they can do are random portfolio pieces of the characters.

Covers started disconnecting, contextually, from the books when the interiors fell so far behind schedule editors could no longer be sure what scenes might actually be in the issues. Professionalism!!!

It seems, especially with the explosion of alternate 'rare' covers, that covers are more like separate mini-posters, but then that's all of a comic a lot of these 'investor' types will ever see lest the slightest blemish afflict their historic specimen. Comic shops seemed poised to be replaced by high-end 'galleries' for awhile... what a strange trend; the humble and once low rent comic book trying so hard to gain uptown pretensions. Give me a funny book with a monster that has a crazy name any day, lots more fun!
I was (virtually) looking through some of those DC Rudolph The Reindeer comics and Sam Grossman did some great cartoony covers on those (and later Sheldon Mayer)... apparently Grossman also did the Peter Panda comics for DC my Mom remembers having when she was little (she also liked their Fox & The Crow by Jim Davis).
Dutch artist Daan Jippes did a lot of fantastic covers for the Gladstone Disney line in the mid-late '80s!

Almost redundant to mention Sergio. Everything he touches is gold!

Carmine Infantino had a great run on THE FLASH way back when... and I was drawn to Marvel back in the day by all the amazing covers done by Gil Kane before I was attracted to the works of George Pérez, JB, Walt Simonson and Alan Davis.
C!

Sal Buscema never seemed to snag too many covers during the '70s and early '80s, but once he was pegged as the regular artist for SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN in the late '80s, his work really got bumped up to a whole new level, especially being able to handle the covers as well.
One of the best runs he ever had, IMO.
