I guess i really wasnt clear as to what i meant.
We have all heard about all those Byrne Basher say Byrne doesnt do this or his old
stuff is better, he hates the fans blah, blah, blah,
Which never has been true.
But i will say this that the book fair here at my little nephew's
school is still going on tommorrow, and guess what i'm going to buy.
It's always good to go back to school.
If this a dumb thread to have started then i will say this.
Mr.Byrne's on what lane are the red sweater's on?

A) JB drew Batman book for Kids

B) JB doesn't hate his fans.

Chain of Reasoning:

From #A : JB believes it appropriate to do comic book related material  for children.

Postulate #1  Children who read comic book related material may become fans.

Postulate #2   If you hate something you do not work to increase it.

Conclusion #B.

An analogous argument would be:  Writer X writes book for children about Clowns  in which clowns are cool.  Other things being equal that is a piece of supportive (though non-conclusive) evidence that he doesn't disapprove of children and adults liking the circus.

I appreciate the positive feeling or intent behind the thread, but the thread's title is pretty funny.  I'd be alarmed if someone started a thread that said, "And they say Ethan strangles kittens!" that went on to say how I support the ASPCA.  Aw, that's nice of someone to post....Wait, who says I strangle kittens?!

If the doorbell rings on Halloween, I think I'll head for the basement and lock the door!

That was a good laugh JB.

All of the negative comments against Mr. Byrne got their start on the DC message boards. They used to let them post stuff that was clearly libelous. I haven't looked at those boards in ages so I don't know if they cleaned up the rubbish or not.   They would critisise doom patrol issues without having even read them. Remember when some guy advocated shoplifting comics? Just loopy stuff went on over there.

______________

Who'da thunk you could scare the guy who draws Blood of the Demon?  I wouldn't think anything could be more petrifying than the guy who had his face bitten off!

I know, but...nevermind.

I was trying to figure this one out too.  I don't think John hates his fans at all but something was really lost in the translation here.

It was kind of like, "And they say my car doesn't get good gas mileage" and then my story is "I was walking down the street when I saw someone washing a car that looked just like mine so that proves it gets good gas mileage" heh.

This thread seems as appropriate as any; my "Byrne doesn't hate his fans" story.

About a year ago, I was "away from home." I'm the sickly sort, and that's my euphemism for "in the hospital for an extended stay." I was talking to Melissa on another board and mentioned that this particular stay wasn't going well and I was a bit down. At one point she asked me if I were a fan of John Byrne. I wasn't quite sure what she was getting at, but then realized she'd become a mod here and was likely just curious. I said I was a big fan of his work with Superman in the 80s, but couldn't really afford to keep up with many comics any more and didn't know much of his more recent stuff. I didn't think much more of her asking. A few weeks later, when my mail was brought to me, there was an envelope with John Byrne's name on it, and inside was this-

I was a bit surprised, a bit amazed, and very happy. It made the whole stay considerably brighter, getting that drawing. When I told Melissa it'd arrived she filled me in on the details. It seems she'd went through the usual means of getting a commision, but when he saw Melissa's request he did it simply as a favor for a friend. I'm not sure how much she gave him by way of details concerning who it was for and my situation, but any way you look at it, it boils down to Mr. Byrne doing something nice for a friend and a fan just for the sake of it.

I passed along my thanks through Melissa, and I apologize for never having thanked you more directly before now; I've just honestly never been quite sure of how to go about it. It was very much appreciated, that gesture, and it made a bad time much better. Thank you, Mr Byrne.

(And thank you, as well, Melissa. We need to catch up soon.)
