Very saddened by this news. I met George Perez at the 2012 C2E2 convention and he was every bit the upstanding person as I've heard for years.

This is probably the saddest I've ever been over someone I don't personally know. Reading what he wrote just ripped my heart out. I had the chance to meet him once...incredibly nice, gracious and sincere.

This sucks. One of the few times I have been genuinely saddened by such news about someone I never met.

A beautiful letter from a beautiful artist and human being.
That's really really sad.

As a kid growing up in the 70s, my best friend and I had two favourite artists, whose work we always looked out for: John Byrne and George Perez. Whichever titles featured their talents, we prioritised for purchase - and immediately consigned to our "most treasured issues" piles. No matter how variable the plot or script, a grand time was guaranteed by their unsurpassed artistry.
I am incredibly saddened by this news but remain in huge admiration of the dignity and bravery of the man. My dearest wish for George is a happy sunset filled with the love, warmth and appreciation of family, friends & fans alike.

I had two favourite artists, whose work we always looked out for: John Byrne and George Perez.•• Not many people know this, but George and I started at Marvel at almost exactly the same time. The first full story he worked on, after the two page Deathlok "origin", was a Gulliver Jones piece in one of the black and white magazines. Duffy Vohland was assigned to ink it, and Bob Layton and I assisted, uncredited. I inked the pretty girls and, if I remember correctly, a monster. Hard to believe that was dangerously close to half a century ago!

His impact on the industry is tough to explain to anyone under the age of 18, but when I look at the comic book artists that have taken things to near photo realism detail it all seems to point back to Mr. Perez. His pages were packed with detail and textures. News of his cancer and decision to go gracefully seems very much like the man I’ve heard so much about from friends. I hope there is tremendous support for him in the next few months.

I met George often enough to consider him an acquaintance, and this news is heart breaking. A man that talented and that good and that kind - NEVER too busy for a kind word or a photo - and as many have said, as friendly as the day is long. Totally cooperative in his drawings; he once drew Plastic Man for my wife, and very little of the paper WASN'T Plastic Man!
Mr. Byrne, please, take care of yourself! I don't know if you consider me an acquaintance or not, but I would weep for you just as I have for George. Not enough good guys left in this world... so please stick around!
