Trump says we have to open the “houses of worship” because they are “essential”.

2000 years ago, Jesus had this to say:

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Nuff said?

I thought the movie Ben Hur incorporated that principle of not praying in public/they have their reward already quite nicely. Hey Trumpo... Charlton Heston, turning away to be private... lepers were healed.... how did you miss this flick?

I got a message from Jesus awhile ago, he was saying 'enough with the chanting and praying already! All day someone is invoking me somewhere, usually over the most boring things. Football players I need to keep hearing from? Oy vey!'

Well, he was addressed as Rabbi, made merely 'teacher' in the King James version.

Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Yes, I was in Godspell.

What would any prophet of "truth" say? ARE there any? I wonder how many men and women tried to spread what they saw as the truth with no ulterior motives, no desire for gain, riches, or self-aggrandizement.

I suspect that the priests had them killed as quickly as possible. When disseminating the word of the Lord, there's no room for truth or charity.

I can't believe people would politicize religion. This reminds me of the last
time this happened - which is every day in the entire history of religion.

I have more than a gut feeling that the whole reason behind this church movement to reopen NOW - is that their PRIDE (which by the way is a big ole SIN) was just plain bruised by not being deemed "essential".

We remain closed & will do so until it is safe to open. But I’m in the UK.

Trump is doing this to get votes. The amount of crap that is ignored
scares me.
He must just spend a good part of his day laughing behind those
Pastor’s backs.

Don't confuse Christians by dragging Jesus into it. Many of them prefer to ignore him.

Don't confuse Christians with the USA's Bible Belt nuts.

Petter and Peter,

No, no, no. I gotta disagree with you there.  The right-wing, fundamentalist, conservative Christians have been going around for years making windows into men's souls saying who is a Christian and who ISN'T.

Just because you might be of a more liberal, tolerant bent, doesn't mean you get to commit the same sin of arrogance that they have been committing.

Remember, there are plenty of places where the hellfire and brimstone Christians get Jesus exactly right and where the loving, forgiving Christian couldn't get him more wrong.

Maybe it's my misunderstanding, but this passage
from the King James bible: "But when ye pray, use
not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they
think that they shall be heard for their much
speaking" seems at odds to me with The Lord's
Prayer: "Pray then like this: 'Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us
our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil.'"

Isn't that being repetitive?

Jesus presented the Lord’s Prayer to demonstrate form, not content. Not surprisingly, early Christians seized upon the words, and set about memorizing them, despite that being precisely what Jesus said not to do.

(For ease of discussion I reference Jesus as if he was an actual historical person.)
