Add me to the list of those who consider JRSR their favorite Spider-Man artist.

I loved Romita's work on Daredevil, Fantastic Four and Captain America as well and just wish we had gotten to see more comics out of him when he became Art Director, although we did get to see plenty of covers by him and his fingerprints all over the line.

I also remember John Romita developing the visual look of a minor character who would debut in the pages of The Incredible Hulk...

The John Romita sketch of Wolverine is a neat find!

It possibly gives insight as to why Wolverine has those black "triangles" around his costume: they seem to suggest the claws of a wolverine surrounding his body. That's very cool.

That piece of art must fetch a fortune.

Y'know, in all these years that I've known about this sketch, I never considered that the side drawing was meant to be his torso demonstrating a claw pattern. But I think you may be right!

Here's the full page:

It looks like Romita intended for his back to be all-black.

BTW, Wolverine may be the ultimate "created by committee" character. From the age, to the claws, to face under the mask, to the backstory, to the evolution of the costume - all handled by several different people.

But to keep this focused on Romita for his thread, it looks pretty clear from his profile drawing that he was intended to be much younger as Len Wein had said.

Thanks for posting the full drawing, Vinny.

The Wolverine's mask is interesting. Romita drew the mask with fine lines on the forehead, suggesting a somewhat "furry" consistency --- similar to Silver Age Hawkman's mask. Wonder if JR had intended Wolverine to be a bright yellow? And the way he drew the two black "arches" protruding from his mask strongly suggests to me that they may actually be stylized ears.

I had the honor of meeting both Romita's at Fan Expo Canada 2007. Got several Spidey graphic novels and posters signed by both. There was an awesome Spidey and Black Cat coplayers couple ahead of me and Romita Sr. chatted with them and he proceeded to do a large Spidey head sketch on Spider insignia in costumes back. The line went quiet and when done, some ooo's and ahhh's. Classy Mr. Romita Sr!!!

The Birthday celebration continues.

Found this on my Facebook feed the other day. I don't think I've come across any instances of JR drawing a DC character, so this is a cool find. Makes me wonder how JR's Superman and Wonder Woman would look like.

The solid black on the back of the Wolverine design is interesting, as it really does create the impression of a clawed-hand wrapped around him, the claws going around him to appear on the front of the costume (and it was instantly not adhered to in the pages of his first appearance in the Incredible Hulk).
