The thing that makes the Havok costume work so well comes straight
from the way Neal Adams draws. One of the most photorealistic artists
ever to work in comics, he is nevertheless not afraid to be UNrealistic
when it suits the drawing. Basically, he never forgets that it's a
DRAWING, not a photograph. Even when he's tracing a photograph!

So the "Havok effect" on the costume --seen from head-on no matter
what the angle from which the figure is viewed --is TOTALLY
"unrealistic", but for the dramatic visual language of comic books, it
works PERFECTLY.
====================

Could they keep the correct effect in CGI? Or in animation/3D
animation?

I can't understand why any artist would want to change the Havok costume. It was perfect when Neal designed it, and it's perfect when rendered by JB.

••

Perhaps I am giving them less credit than they deserve, but it often seems to me that a lot of artists of the "younger generation" have no interest in challenging themselves in any way. They draw the way they draw, and if something doesn't fit easily within the way they draw, they want to change it, rather than change themselves.

Thus, as noted, Havok's costume is not easy to draw, so it's gotta GO. He needs to be wearing belts and flanges and pouches and a jacket -- the stuff that's easy to draw, hiding as it does a multitude of sins.

Havok's costume is just about one the coolest costumes ever created but you need to know how to draw the human figure to do it justice. I agree with JB, it wouldn't surprise me that the changes to Havok's costume had something to do to with the artists of the 90's lacking in real drawing skills.

I would think drawing actual clothing over the body would be HARDER than drawing what is, essentially, the naked form.

Not if drawing it properly is not a major concern!!

Both Havok and Wolverine look particularly awesome here, but Logan just really looks great. I miss that character quite a bit!

JB, one of my favorite UXM arcs is #125-128, which came to be called the Proteus Saga...and one of the main reasons why was the appearance of both Havok and Polaris.  Lorna didn't get much screen time unfortunately but you seemed to have a real affinity for Havok.  Was there any discussion of adding him, or them both, to the team as regulars?

Speaking of Neal, its been said before but deserves repeating that his design of Havok and redesign of Angel's costume are among the greatest comic book unis ever IMO.

Awesome as always!
I have always thought of the "Havok effect" as something not part of the fabric of the costume, but as something perceived or emanating from within Havok in such a way that the viewer always perceives it in a specific way. I interpret it as a fabric that is not black, but completely unreflective so that no color, depth or definition can be perceived and the Havok effect is 'seen' more in the mind than by the eye. Is that anywhere close to how it is intended?

Nope. Chris seemed to think everybody who left in 94 was gone for good --- except Jean, of course!

++++

Could not agree more! And, of course, both were eventually mucked up -- Angel almost immediately.
