Dave Pruitt, I also think it is ironic and hypocritical of Alan Moore to make a stand when other people, particularly in film, adapt his characters (though I discount LOEG as his characters), yet he seems to be able to destroy other peoples characters and is treated by some as a godlike figure.

Great point, Gregg.  Poor ol' Alan Moore.  Hates Hollywood because they don't get his adaptations right to the letter, so he refuses to accept their checks (often passing them on to his other collaborators), but when it comes to sticking to the tone and tenor of the classic characters upon which he's most famous for writing, it's all out the window.  We should all feel for the guy.

Moore = Hypocrite.

I expect LOST GIRLS to be about precisely as damaging to its source material as the Anne Rice stuff, which is to say: not at all.

Doesn't matter.  Moore speaks about fidelity to character with regard to his own, but doesn't give a rats ass about fidelity to character when they are someone else's characters.  Whether it be an adaptation of the source or something altogether different, like LOEG or LOST GIRLS, it makes no difference.  It's Moore bitching about it in one context and finding an excuse to do it himself in another.

I believe Moore has said in relation to movie adaptations that he doesn't
really care what they do with his work, as long as they take his name off
it, so he's not really that much of a hypocrite, he doesn't care if they
screw up his work, as long as they don't accredit the work to him.

The problem he had with V was that the producers kept calling him
saying "Just see the movie" and eventually he just got sick of it.

I don't think he's a hypocrite, he just doesn't realize that other people
look at things like that differently from him.

Wally Wood is definitely one of comics' greatest tragedies.  His work at its peak was absolutely beautiful.  It was such a shame he ended as he did.  Just seeing pictures of him from just before his death is unsettling; he was 54 when he died, and he looked twenty years older.

I don't think I let a month go by without re-reading at least one of his stories for EC.  I remember a story Larry Hama wrote and drew for Bizarre Adventures -- the violence issue -- that looked like Hama was seriously chanelling Wood.

Hey, my 137th post...

He says that now. I doubt he believes it, as he's often been outspoken about adaptations of his work in the past, so much so that it hardly comes off as a guy that "doesn't really care".

I remember him saying on numerous occasions that he wouldn't have
made a fuss about V at all if the producers would of left him along, he
said basically that if they keep him completely uninvolved in it, he doesn't
give a rat's ass.

I have no real reason to believe he wasn't telling the truth about it.

David, I am fan of Biz Adv, but don't recall that...issue #?

Incidentally, I was looking at some early Iron Fist stuff Hama did and I think
is awesome.

****

Jacob, when a writer demands that his name be removed from a work that is a protest. Steranko did it on X-MEN. I did it on FANTASTIC FOUR and with a recent plan for DC Direct to release a "John Byrne Superman" action figure. Harlan Ellison was so appalled by "The Starlost" that he ordered the producers to use a pseudonym. "Cordwainer Bird". Ordering one's name removed from a work is in no way synonymous with "I don't care". It says "I care very much, and I don't want to be associated with this."

As opposed to all the whining and bitching he's done about From Hell,
LOEG, and the various treatments of Watchmen, Jacob? And let's not forget
him insisting that DC pull their plans for the DC Direct Watchmen action
figures.

Your use of V as a defense of "doesn't really care" speaks volumes.  That's the most recent project of Alan Moore's to receive the Hollywood treatment, but by far not the first.  FROM HELL, LOEG, etc. were produced prior to V and Moore was extremely outspoken about what Hollywood did to "his" characters and story.  "His" in quotes because, ironically and especially with regard to LOEG, they weren't his to begin with.

Flavio:  It was issue #31.  Hama's story had cannibals, pretty girls, and an action hero who couldn't have been older then twelve.

Matt, Jacob has negated your post above with facts, you then counter it with supposition and possible mindreading on your part of Alan Moore.  He is right and you are wrong.  Accept it.

Facts about what, Luke?  No facts were presented.  Jacob contends that because Moore "doesn't really care" about V, that means, as a whole, Moore "doesn't really care" about adaptations of his work in general.  That's wrong.  Google Moore in conjunction with WATCHMEN, FROM HELL, LOEG and you'll find an Alan Moore who most certainly does care about what people do with "his" characters.  As JB most accurately points out above, taking your name off a project because you disagree with it is a protest.  One hardly protests something if they "don't really care".

Thanks for playing, Luke, but you're the one who is wrong.
