When drawing a character like the Thing, it’s perfectly okay to bring one’s own artistic tropes to the table—I do!—but it must always be remembered that the final effect should be as if all the artists are looking at the same “live model”.

That Thing is amazing. How long since you last drew Ben, JB?

Not sure. I doodle him now and again, still searching for a properly monstrous version.

Of course, here I’m working with his 1980 version, pre-me.

In the process of buying this page right now, should have it in a few months. That third panel is probably my third favorite Byrne Thing image (behind the sitting in the cab seat panel and the pin-up from one of your earlier issues).

Third panel makes me think about Dick Ayers.
Fourth makes me think about Chic Stone.

Second is supposed to be Dick. Third is meant to invoke George Bell (Roussos).

Amazing. All of these years on this forum, and there's still new things for me to learn!

The "rocky" Ben Grimm is my Thing (heh), but I also dig the "dinosaur hide" version.

Pencil on top, almost all pens and quill in the middle inks and almost all brush in the bottom inks. Tried something different with the reflection effect that doesn't reduce well. I wouldn't have really considered using a brush for The Thing much, but there are some lines that have a great overall look.
