Since I'm still trying to figure out just where 14 starts, and I don't want to lose work days, I have jumped ahead to the demon issue, and I'll be tinkering with that until 14 gels. Here's a peek at the splash, copy 'n' all.

For those who are interested, I did layouts for the figures, but the background I drew starting at lower left and working across until I ran out of paper. I used Google to find reference for the kinds of trees and how the snow piled up, but I moved elements around to suit my purposes.

(One person I showed it to interpreted the snow as grass and leaves. That was from the original, without copy.)

Oh, and a few posts back I made a reference to my entire run fitting between two Xmases, thinking of Chris and Dave's first Sentinel story, and Kitty's Demon adventure. But now I remember the story we set in Japan also happened at Xmas, so my time with the X-Men clocks in, for them, at just under two years.

This is what leads to me playing fast and loose with the ELSEWHEN timeline, as events you have not yet seen mean Kitty's supernatural excursion had to happen somewhere in the middle of my "issues". I guess the X-Men have more than two Strato-Jets!*

This is why I keep emphasizing it's not a good thing to look for one-to-one relationships between the original timeline and ELSEWHEN.

Of course Kitty and Colossus look great, but those freshly-covered bushes at the bottom are blowing my mind. Instantly recognizable for what they are, but I have no idea how you pulled it off. They should read as just hollow forms, but my brain instantly recognized them as dormant bushes covered in fluffy, new snow. I don't understand your witchcraftery, but I do appreciate it!

The scenery is amazing --- trees are very difficult I imagine. I don't think I've ever seen this type of snow-scape attempted in a comic layout. Beautiful!

I also really enjoy the look of Kitty in that original-style costume. Brings back great Kirby memories.

Really, this whole run has been so LUSH with visual (and other) treats. Thank you.

Those are actually fairly simple, if tedious. I just outline the branches, with a heavier line on one side. Then I draw as many layer as I feel are needed.

As is so often the case, the trick is knowing when to stop.

And that first page is AMAZING!  You can feel the weight of the snow on their legs as they stomp through it!

You and Kirby are/were some of the fastest pencilers around!
Looking at that page somehow reminds me of Bob Ross creating 'happy little trees'.

I'm so happy you are spending more time with the real Kitty. She deserves you.

As you can see their breath, it seems somehow obvious to me that they are in snow. Then again, I remember a story of some American drawing illustrations to communicate something to people in a remote part of Asia... and they were horrified by his drawings of half people (just figures from the waist up)... they didn't know how to interpret and just saw a person with no bottom half!
