Interested in hearing how this went over with artists when they learned their covers would include an ad? I'm assuming sales and marketing viewed this as prime advertising space, imagine creative had other thoughts about it.

It seems several of the comics plastered with such ads turned out to be rather collectible.

X-Men 137 is PRICELESS. Way beyond $2500.
Anybody here win that Columbia Formula 10 Ten-Speed racer?

Of course, don't forget DC's "Celebrate the Bicentennial", where to win, one had to clip off the tops of the covers. That didn't do 'em much good, to be sure...

I will add that to me the DC Rebirth banner is an eyesore. Many great covers and all I see is this.

Marvel must have gotten a pretty penny from the advertiser to allow the banner to swallow up so much real estate on the covers of that era. I certainly was annoyed with the ad banner, even as a kid.
And, yeah, that "DC Rebirth" banner is kind of intrusive and ugly, too.

The worst was back in the day when these were on spinner racks, often all you'd see is advertisement after advertisement, because only the top fifth of the cover was being displayed. Fine if that's the X-Men or whatever logo. Frustrating if it's a "You could win..." ad.

I have a totally different feeling about those covers. This year was when I first starting buying my own Marvel comics and so a wonderful wave of nostalgia crashes over me when I see those banners.
