Something crashes over me, too, tho I’m not sure I’d call it nostalgia!

I agree.

Those banner ads made the whole product look cheap imho.

And how effective were those ads? I can't imagine a kid wanting to buy the latest issue of Batman... but instead bought Daredevil to win that Ten-Speed!

I was the target age, and it didn't compel me to even bother entering any sweepstakes. I don't know of anyone who did, but I guess someone must have somewhere.

I'm sure the ads were "effective" in terms of the ad revenue they generated for Marvel. I'd be surprised if the higher-ups gave it any more thought than that.

DC's done ads for their movies the same way in recent years--pretty sure the Green Lantern movie was promoted that way.

The Green Lantern movie ad wasn't so large and obtrusive, and the film was a DC property, so it made sense to promote it on their books.

In the UK we couldn`t even enter to win! But as these
comics were not usually displayed on spinner racks, but
either piled one on top of the other (you had to flick
through the pile), or splayed like a deck of cards
(those corner boxes were a godsend), the ads didn`t
affect me too much, other than being intrusive of the
art.

Here's one great Bill Sienkiewicz cover we missed out on because of that ad.  Supposedly, there wasn't enough room for everything (though, normally, that would have been PLENTY of space).  The Ron Wilson/Dave Simons replacement for issue #13 is not a favorite.

This reminds me of when that intrusive bar code started to appear on the covers. I would often wonder why they couldn't have put that thing on the back cover.

Same in Australia. We also got the comics three months after their cover date (they were surface shipped via leaky rowboat). Plus the 60c cover price translated to over $1.00 AUD. On the whole I tried to ignore the ads, subscription offers and contests because I'd get very jealous!

The ad on the cover of X-MEN #137 is utterly horrible.
