So no, they shouldn't kill. If someone writes a story where they are put in a position where they "have to", that simply means the writer wanted to write a story in which they would kill, rather than (heroically!) find another alternative.
=======================================================
There is an excellent online interview with the late Stephen Cannell where he talks about an episode of "The Rockford Files" they were working on where the villains did something so bad, Jim Rockford would have no choice but to kill them.
Cannell and his writers quickly backtracked on the idea no matter what angle they came at it from as they saw instantly that that choice they were making would invalidate and destroy the character of Jim Rockford.

For me, Wolverine was a better character when he suppressed his urge to go into berserker rages and didn't want to kill. Today's writers seem to enjoy giving Wolverine a body count with no second thoughts about killing.

Another drawback to a hero killing the bad guys:
You never get to develop a Rogues Gallery.

I thought JB's "Superman" #22 handled it quite well.

Always does make me smile when someone reels off people in The Punisher's recurring villains' list: Jigsaw, Bushwhacker, Bullseye, and The Kingpin to name a few.
Given the character's nature and definition, he shouldn't have a Rogues Gallery, but as people want to see how he'd get on against other heroes villains, they are painted in to a corner to find an excuse not to kill off these villains, so the story is already null and void in respect of what The Punisher is supposed to do.

Someone should tell Mr. Snyder that, before going into this verbal crusade with the purpose of "waking up" comic book fans that are "living in a dream world" he should probably consider that Batman and Superman are fictional characters and that these fans along with most of the world's population clearly have a better grasp at this concept than he ever will.
Mr. Snyder is a 53 year old man. The immaturity... the audacity (in the worst way possible)... the hubris of comparing his movie (probably the worst of its genre) to the Watchmen comic (probably the best of its genre)... I'm lost for words.
A very sad and frustrated man that can't even begin to comprehend why almost everyone hates his movies.

Andrew: ...I recently picked up the trades to the Injustice Gods Among Us series. Pretty lengthy all together, maybe 50-60 issues. It's like watching a really bad reality show that you don't want to admit you like. Not giving much away as it sets the pace in the first issue...something very tragic happens to Superman and he decides to go around killing all the bad guys (and some good) to try and bring about peace.
---
I can't get into comics like that. It sounds like a story about a guy in a Superman costume -- because Superman would never do something THAT extreme.

At least the INJUSTICE series never crossed over into the mainline DC titles, and thank...whomever for that.

The premise for the INJUSTICE game and comic reads like the worst fan-fic, like some 14-year-old wannabe edgelord figured he could do KINGDOM COME better.

I'm old school. Heroes don't kill. They find other ways to stop the bad guy, then let the legal system do its work.

If heroes killed, you'd rarely have repeat villains. And certain ones like the Red Skull (Nazi) would be long dead.
