Good luck Marc. I’ve known someone who used the patch effectively, and stayed on it for a long time too. They figured it was still better than smoking as they took the time they needed to work through things. So if you kick this right away, cool! But if it takes longer than it should, keep working through it!

Good luck Marc, have you tried vaping as an intermediary substitution as you wean yourself off cigarettes? I know it`s difficult to give up, my wife smoked since we met, and despite my gentle nagging to give up, it was only when she had a really bad chest infection and the fact she is on immunosuppressant medication, that she was frightened into giving up. You`ve really got to WANT to give up, but i`m sure you`ll get plenty of support of members of this forum.

I smoked for almost twenty years, a pack a day, and everyone I knew also was a smoker except one grandmother, and though I never thought I could do it I have been free of the things for twenty years as of last February.
Here's what I think helped me...
I said to myself there's never a good time.
That I want to stick with this attempt so I never have to go through this hell of quitting again (I had tried and failed to quite more than once before), that I never have to feel like crap for not doing being able to stop this... ever again.
I saw myself as a non-smoker. It felt phony at first but it grew.
I got a hate-on for the power the things had over me. I hated how they could make me feel about myself, how dare they!
I can never have just one or part of one, it's like alcoholism, for life you can never get away with seeing what it was like again, it's a highly addictive substance and that yellow stained King Nicotine with the dark circles under his eyes will be laughing at you if you do saying he has his hooks into you again.
Do it the way you are set to do it and don't let anyone tell you something that could derail that, like there is some better way or anything, just do it the way you are set to and that's that. I got to where I was on nothing and only when I was absolutely crashing would use the substitute thing (that could be patch or gum or some kind of anxiety pill if you were prescribed one, or herbal thing like St. John's Wort).
Be the non-smoker, that is you. Fight King Nicotine the ugly little bugger!. Dedicate it to God or family if that helps, that they are more powerful and a source of strength.

Positive thoughts to you, Marc. I no longer smoke cigarettes and haven't for 14 years.
Try to avoid negative words and thoughts associated with the word quitting. Try "improving" my health or "redirecting" my income or energies.

I've heard patches are the best way to quit. One over each eye and you'll never find your cigarettes!
Seriously though, good luck!

Dear Friends,
Thank you for all your good wishes and comments! I am happy to report that today has gone pretty darn smoothly! I am very impressed, so far, with the efficacy of the patch - I have experienced very few cravings for a cigarette and the cravings I have experienced are far less in intensity than any I have experienced during past attempts at quitting.
To answer some of your questions, I have tried vaping in the past and found it is not for me. I didn't find the nicotine "rush" that I got from it at all satisfying.
Yes, I have checked out smokefree.gov - and am availing myself of its many tips and resources.
Again, thank you for all your words of support!
Marc
