While I'm sure there are a few Chic Stone
and God help us, Vince Colletta fans out
there. I think it's safe to say that
Kirby's best inked were Joe Sinnott and
Mike Roger. I think it comes down to what
you like.
Personally, I think I prefer Royer. Joe is
an amazing inked and artist. That said,
the Kirby/ Sinnott pairing is a blend of
complementary styles. Royer, IMO, was a
bit more faithful to Jack's pencils. A
side by side comparison of Jack's OMAC
pencils next to the finished inked pages
show very few changes, even to the line
weight, unless it was really warranted.
At the end of the day, it's really
splitting hairs.
Do you have a preference?
If so, who?

To me, it depended on the book. I actually like Colletta on Thor (but didn't like him leaving out things). Royer was, as you say, the most faithful, but Sinnott's inks were awful pretty too. I also loved Wood's inks on Kirby. Guess my top three would be 1.) Royer 2.) Sinnott 3.) Wood.

Sinnott. Royer was faithful to Kirby's pencils, but Sinnott took Kirby's pencils and embellished them in the best possible way.
I like Dick Ayers and Chic Stone on Kirby's pencils too.
Vinnie Colletta...no.

Sinnott! There's some wild variance in inkers during the pre-Sinnott FANTASTIC FOUR--Ayers, Roussos, etc. It wasn't until Sinnott came along that the book matured into its best self.
I rather like Colletta on THOR, but I really found myself enjoying Chic Stone's stuff, too.

It's really hard to choose because each inker brought their own style to Kirby's art. And in many ways, each one was synonymous to the book.

Dan Adkins. Which is kind of like saying Wood. Check out the covers of Avengers #151 and 157 ('70s Marvel). Really beautiful, perfect, comic art to me. Maybe because we didn't see all that much of the combination I would've loved to have seen more. Joe Sinnott otherwise. Vince Colletta had the romance comic 'glamour' or sparkle I thought, I never understood the knocks against him. Paul Reinman or Larry Leiber I could see knocking (but sometimes people are there because they are there and they just get the job done when it has to be done).

Yeah, it looks like GoDaddy took the Galleries here. Glad I saw them before that happened. :^(
I guess someone would have to rename those pages and relink them if they don't want to pay off the new holder of the rights to those names.

I'm partial to Dick Ayers inks over Jack Kirby pencils. Sinnott is very good, of course, and gives it a different feel -- almost a lush, more complete look. But I really admire the organic brushwork that you got with Ayers.
