I can honestly say that this thought balloon - do I even need to say what issue it is from? - is profound and almost certainly my favourite thought balloon ever from our host:

I once thought about that quote. Personal story: I briefly crossed paths with the ex-boyfriend of a woman I dated. We had chatted for a while - mainly about heavy metal - but he still pined for his ex, I was with her at the time, and it caused problems.

But it remained cordial and he was nice to me at times. In a different reality, I would have called this person a friend.

Great thought from Batman.

I was torn between choosing that one and the one I went with. Hard to narrow it down to one!

As of right NOW, I'm going with this word balloon from my favorite John Byrne
series.

"AND HE KNEW BECAUSE HE WAS ME! I AM SATHANAS!"

(There's some serious balloon popping going on there!)

By the way, I didn't specify how many in this topic (mainly because someone inevitably breaks the rules) so include a few if you want.

Robbie...

ITEM: Hope you won't mind seeing some items that might be (for example) Chris Claremont or Roger Stern. Mr. Byrne worked really closely with them, so it's hard to discern if, say, a good X-Men quote ("Now it's MY turn!") or Captain America quote ("It's worth it.") gets mistaken...

ITEM: I love your choice because of its homage to Star Trek. Classic begets classic.

ITEM: Okay, I'll reserve the right to add others... I'm just going from my decidedly questionable memory. But I really liked two quotes.
Doomsday.1 #2 - "What am I going to do? Be third base?"
Fantastic Four #233 - "That's because you're the kind of boy from who any mother could get proud. Because you are a hero."

Pretty much defeats the point of the exercise.

There's so many, but I'm in a TOS mood so this popped up first in my head.

From "Balance Of Terror"
I probably don't have all the words perfect though...

Commander: I'm disappointed. This is too easy a way to foil so cunning an adversary.

I think, for the purpose of the topic, I'd prefer pure, unadulterated Mr Byrne quotes that we KNOW he wrote. :)

Okay. I meant unintentionally, but avoiding such books means avoiding any "tainting." Easy enough, and hey - I was even able to do it! Now to practice tying my shoes again... :)

Most times I think of JB's writing, I think of how well he writes villains... and for starters, I love this Luthor scene from JB's SUPERMAN run for how it set up Lex's arrogance -
