Is there any story in the whole history of the industry that has been dragged out for so long, and spread so thin? ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- The only one that I think comes close is Gwen Stacy/Green Goblin and the clone stuff that followed.

But the Gwen "saga" has mostly come at us in spurts, while Phoenix seems to be ongoing. At least, it seems like every time I turn around, there's more Phoenix stuff!!! YMMV

I liked when Jean originally returned in Fantastic Four Phoenix was NOT part of her. But Marvel has tried continuously to put Phoenix back into her. Whenever they brought up Jean, Phoenix image was When they brought young Jean from the past I had hoped she would have a clean break but they still link her to the Phoenix. The Phoenix seems like the Marvel boogieman, popping up constantly. While I loved the original Phoenix storyline, it always seemed to make the rest of the X-Men like a fifth wheel.

The whole thing about the one "true" Jean Grey is pretty damn convoluted. I think it's in reference to the younger version of Jean that was part of the "Amazing X-Men" series a few years back.
Ever since Chris Claremont and later writers have kept tinkering with the continuity of Phoenix and Jean Grey, I have lost track if it is now cannon that Jean really was supposed to be the Phoenix, or not.

I gather that Jean wasn't really Phoenix until, eventually, she was.
I don't mean there was a retcon. I mean that at some point Jean actually got the power of Phoenix.
I think this story is a precursor, or an explanation of how, things in the X-Men wing of the Marvel U are finally going to go back to normal, with single, "properly-aged" versions of Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Jean (I almost wrote "Marvel Girl" -- if only!), Logan, et al. coming back.
If it was me I'd just have the Shaper of Worlds wave his hands and the X-Men would all be back as they were circa 1975. But Marvel wouldn't make enough money that way, so never mind what I'd do.

Thinking about this topic, it makes me ponder thoughts about how comics can grab people.
I stated earlier that I'd love to see the original X-Men take on the Sinister Six. Don't ask me to know whether any of the original Sinister Six are alive or active as I don't really follow Marvel now (but let's assume they are - or could be).
What would grab people? An action-packed cover, with word balloons, featuring the X-Men battling Sinister Six? Or a pin-up/pose cover pertaining to an old storyline featuring Phoenix?

Phoenix is strictly preaching to the choir. It's got zero "pull" for civilians.
