Of course I do hope you aren't finished yet.

So do I, Anthony! And, of course, I will be continuing with the commissions (I hope!).

But it feels right now that getting back to hand drawn comics will require some kind of major stylistic break from what I've done before.

And scary!

But every time something like this. . .

. . . falls out of my pencil, I wonder if I need to push more in that direction.

I can't begin to answer that question.

I do, however, find it very encouraging that there is that sense of exploration and discovery navigating its way through your mind. I'm sure that the results of which can only bring me (and others) great stories and visual feasts.

JB. 2 simple questions:

1. Was the cover of this issue also finished to be posted in this thread?

2. Are all the black areas real inks or some places were filled with a computer black effect?

Thanks!

One of the curious aspects of what happens when something like that drawing "falls out of my pencil"is that it often feels as if I don't actually need to "push" in that direction -- that I am actually pushing against it. As if, if I just relaxed and went all Zen and didn't fuss and bother about what I was drawing and which ghosts are watching, that's the style that would come out.

CRITICAL ERROR was sort of born out of that, and I still think that, artistically at least, it's one of my most successful efforts.

Living in Canada I see many French comic books (Asterix, Yoko Tsuno, Kid Paddle) when shopping for my kids. JB, your illustration above reminds me a great deal of Mobieus or Geof Darrow. With your admiration for Dan Dare artists I wonder if a form and style experiment are in your future. Have you ever tried a double page layout broken into panels to tell an episodic story? So many wonderful examples on your walls. Release your inner Bellamy? Oh, and try not to let that ghost loom over you. =)

CRITICAL ERROR reminded me of the great scifi short stories and novelas of Ray Bradbury, Norman Spinrad, and Damon Knight.
And I loved that there was no need for dialog, that's how perfect the storytelling was.

I agree with Eric, your illustration has something of Moebius, or Mezieres maybe. Anyway, I am very curious to see where that would lead you.
