We have a Roomba, and love it. The first month we had it we vaccuumed a different room every night just to get them *really* clean, and then vaccuumed once a month or so after that. Vaccuums under the beds, gets into corners, etc. Lovely thing.

It is a little loud, so we close the doors to those rooms being "roombaed", and it does have a couple of issues: has trouble going over electrical cords, has problems with the fringes of our area rugs, sometimes gets stuck under edges of furniture. But once you learn where it has those problems, you can spend maybe five minutes getting a room ready to be cleaned and you're set.

And my parents and I got Roombas at the same time. (When they had friends over they would show theirs off, to many "oohs" and "ahs".) After a couple of years our battery pack wore out (about $35 to replace), but their Roomba wore out (just stopped working); so they gave us the battery pack and ours works great now.

BTW - we have the kind that automatically goes back to its "home base" to recharge. Don't know if having this "return" feature cost more, but hearing it give it's little victory trill when it is back and base and therefore done with the room is always cute.

A friend of mine (Lance Parkin) swears by his.  In a good way.

Marcio sez:
"Well I am blessed for having a very diligent wife that does the cleaning (she is an angel!!!)."

I'm likewise blessed...except for me, it's our having a woman named Anna and her crew of four house cleaners. Also diligent. Don't know about the angelic, but I'm good.

Interested on your feedback on the device. I never seen one in action or talked to someone who has one.

I was recently in a conversation (with one of our site Housekeeping Managers) about them and if there were heavy duty commercial models available (we have over 500k sq ft to clean). I got the feeling he was not impressed with them but his concern may have been protecting staff positions and my concern is more with keeping costs down.

Just curious.... Who'll empty it? Eventually it will need to be emptied.

Don't worry--I'm sure they make a robot for that too!

Roomba arrived yesterday, and after a night sitting on its charging station, is
now puttering around my Studio as I type this. So far seems to be working
fine -- very quiet, dealing with the odd contours created by bookcases and
boxes on the floor. Tried to eat Sam's tail at one point, but he shifted and it
rolled away.

It's still dark here in CT, so I don't have the sunlight hitting the carpet to tell
me how efficient a job it is doing, but if I give it the benefit of the doubt
and, for now, assume it is picking up all the dog hair that was its main
assignment, it seems like it will be money well spent.

Supposedly it returns to the charging station on its own when it's finished.
That I want to see!

Just as I hit SEND, it stopped and sent out a little tonal call for help. Its
brushes had become so loaded with Sam hair they would no longer turn.
Since it has been several weeks (well, probably months!) since I did a
thorough job vacuuming the Studio, I'm guessing that's not a problem that
will recur if I run the robot once a week or so.

Then it sounds like it is working if it is picking up all of Sam's hair.  Now, if only I had that much hair to spare!

Wonder if Sam thinks you now have a pet number 3.

Roomba Update: After running "him" twice a day for the first three days,
then twice a week, yesterday I ran "him" for the first time in a week, and can
happily report "he" picked up almost nothing off the Studio carpet. Enough
to tell me "he's" still working, but mostly showing that this experiment is a
success, and I can keep my work area free(ish) of Sam hair with minimum
effort!

Does Sam see Roomba as a toy to be played with?  Or something to run from?

Careful, Chief - I think "he" might try to unionize your other robots!
