Hades, the whole Mariko as "Wedded to the Yakuza" noblewoman thing kind of blows, too.
But seriously, I love this thread. Knowing some of the things
which go on behind the office doors when comics are being plotted and
drawn brings a kind of perspective to the whole creative process that
makes one realize what a career in comics might really be like
sometimes. And, of course, we know how editors can be in these
situations.
The list of "Issue numbers - Plots (Antagonist/Villains)" entries is
remarkably similar in structure to what I used to do as a kid.
Planning ahead like that may seem simple at first, but then you
actually have to go and write those
issues. How much could've changed between jotting down the
initial list and the more detailed plotting/scripting once you got down
to it? And this without the editor tapping you on the shoulder
saying "I don't think we should do that."
I like the concept sketches and little commission sketch that Cory
brought up, too. Again, I've done things in a similar fashion as
an aspiring comicbook artist myself. Most astonishing to me is to
learn that Caliban as a concept was much different from the way he
turned out. That JB could draw so well even with a ball-point pen
on notebook paper is proof to me of his talents, no matter how long ago
that was.
One thing of curiosity for me has always been the old Art of John Byrne collection that was out in those days. I wasn't even aware of the interview (what I do remember
is something else entirely, which I think JB must be a little
embarrassed by). Man, that stuff about mutant registration and
the hovering sentinels is creepy! And overdone these days...

In the interview, he suggests that there would soon be a new kind of Sentinel introduced, and that all the mutants in the country would have to be registered and wear some kind of tracker device so that the government knew where they were at all times. Also, that these new Sentinels would be hovering over everything, and keeping the peace by kicking mutant butt when necessary. Hmmm....does that sound...kinda familiar to any of you? Kinda like the plot to Civil War??? John, I hope Marvel's giving you a few bucks for finally using your idea...! I doubt they are, but it sure sounds similar to what you had in mind 25 years ago!**** Sounds like I was describing "Days of Future Past".

this seems like a good place to ask JB:
If you had stayed on X Men, were there any serious plans then (from you, cause obviously Chris remained writing) for any shuffling of the line-up?
What I'm most curious about was:
1. Did you intend for Angel to stay on?
2. Bringing back any of the auxillary characters:
Havok, Polaris, Multiple Man, Dazzler, Sunfire, Beast
3. last (for now); since you had such a great feel for the X villains, did you ever consider bringing back LUCIFER (the guy who crippled Xavier)? or even UNUS?
and, somebody will know this, but, is the TOAD dead?
I just love, loved your use of Mesmero; what a great costume on him I thought.

Something of interest in the interview.
Byrne: One of these days, Roger and I have a Captain America story we'd like to do, guest-starring the X-men, where Cap will be talking to a couple of them, and Wolverine is real quiet at first. And when he finally speaks, Cap will do a take and say, "Corporal Logan?". Because you see, Cap meet him during the war. And that might be the first time in one of the books that we come out and say just how old this guy is.

The Wolverine/Mariko/Sabretooth plot sounds like it would make a stirring What If? mini-series. One day, perhaps.

I love that interview! It had so many little teasers such as that one Cory excerpteded. I still have that magazine around the house somewhere.

The Sentinels were my first X-Men villian. I honestly never tire of them. The Hulk Annual vs the Master Mold was so good, I stole it from my cousin!
