Dave's self-inked art on #100 was simply *gorgeous*.

Wasn't it, tho? One of several jobs of his that made me think maybe I should consider a career as a plumber.

Two points:

1.  Uncanny 99 and 100 were the first two back issues I saved up enough allowance to buy back in 1981.  I memorized every beautiful panel.  Because of that, when Jean popped out of her cocoon in her perfectly rendered little torn black dress, I had a pretty good idea what had happened.

2. Jean's darker hair:  when I read and re-read and re-read again 137, something was always "off" to me with the art on Jean.  Now I know it was her hair being "darkened"  (which goes all the way back to her "Black Queen" look)  And the fact that it was also darker in the unpublished panels from 138 makes so much sense now.

Looking at the the darkened hair clue, it makes Shooter's edict even more bizarre.  The story wasn't finished yet.  Why not simply say, "By the time we get to the end of this, there must be some clear reason why Jean isn't a mass murderer."  Then, simply get out of the way.  Baffling.

The facial expressions and body language in the last few issues have really hammered home what a good, caring young man Peter is.

Colossus is a great character - one of Len Wein's finest creations. His parting words to his parents back in GSXM#1 was re-used for his self-sacrificing "death scene" right before Morrison took over. It brought a tear to my eye.

The last panel in today's page really gives the impression that the X-Men are trudging through water. They look beaten down and I can almost feel the sluggish movement as they make their way to land.

Credit where credit is due. It’s practically a cold swipe of the panel Dave drew in 101.

Thinking about it...there'd be no way wolverine could swim normally. Too dense.

Isn't adamantium supposed to be extremely light weight compared to steel, though? It's possible he wouldn't float but he might be able to swim.

Didn't he swim in the story Archie Goodwin and I did in his own book?

I was going to bring that up! While he wasn't shown explicitly swimming during his battle with Tiger shark, he was left for dead with his claws stuck in some rocks underwater. He made it out off-panel, but unless Namor lent a helping hand, it can be assumed that he was able to swim to safety. I'll have to check my copies in a bit to see if any reference was made to his added weight.
