Loved that punch. When I first got a computer and scanner, that was one of the first pages I scanned to make into a desktop background. I also had no idea who Doc Samson was, but really turned into a big fan of his after seeing this issue.

The best thing about The Punch (and that's what it should be called folks, because it's definitely the best rendered punch in comics history, I believe ardently...), is how realistic it looks. All the proper power, delivery and carry-through is right there in Samson's body language.
I always think the best guys at rendering punches in comics know HOW to throw punches. JB must can throw a mean right!!! Remind me never to brawl with that guy!!

This came out when I wasn't reading comics, so I missed it. JB, I didn't
realize until this thread that you also wrote this. I had it stuck in my head
that you were only artist for Hulk. I never really went looking for this, but
now I want to read it.
And so The Hunt resumes! The Incredible Hunt in this case...

Ryan: "Tim, I believe you're familiar with this guy."
*****
I have been tempted many times to utilize Dave's talents in the art of
comic book hunting, but I find The Hunt is more fun when I pound the
pavement myself. It reminds me of looking for comics as a kid. And for
me The Hunt now includes novels, DVDs, CDs - I only buy from brick and
mortar.
I only buy books or DVDs online when buying things for work. Los
Angeles has lots of excellent used book stores and comic shops, so I
keep my eyes peeled. Inventory in used books stores changes a lot. I
haven't been buying many back issues, tho I started in the last few years
and it's been fun. I have tended to buy more trade paperbacks than back
issues in the past, but buying back issues is a kick.
I just found out this week I will be going to the San Diego con this year -
it's my first time in San Diego for a con and my first con since JB's
farewell at Mid-Ohio. So it's my sense I will be developing a list of stuff I
don't have, like JB's Hulk and his last issues of Alpha Flight.

I’ve always loved the gorgeous Byrne/Wiacek line work on this too brief run—it was really when they started to gel together. In fact, it was what made me request Bob for my first ever Marvel penciling job when I was practically in diapers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the first job of mine that saw print, but that’s for another forum…
