Wonderful to start to an, er, incredible run. I hated to see JB leave AF, but I loved his Hulk! I was so excited to read this first issue, and it delivered and then some. JB's drawing of the mass of muscle of the Hulk is up there with his rubble and space ships in my book. Lots of fun memories from this run, short as it was. This is going to be a good reading club.

I thought this was a exciting start, to what I was hoping to be a long run for JB on the Hulk.

This is how I prefer my Hulk.  I look forward to the TPB as I sold these issues years ago.  They will be fun to revisit and read again.

Heck ya, Joel!  Before I even started scanning, I knew that page had to be posted here.  All the more powerful because we don't see their faces/reactions at that exact second.

Is it me or did John draw Hulk with a much wider face back then?

I love the chapter nods to the first series.

One punch, bwah ha ha ha, one punch...!

I miss the "wimpy" John Byrne Hulk  (LOL)  that gets taken down by one punch.

Actually, the thing I miss the most is John Byrne drawing superhero comics.

I was soooooo excited when this issue came out -- what a bummer this run only lasted about 6 issues...

And I'm not sure I like Bob Wiacek's inks -- they seem too "thin" for a Hulk book (in retrospect).  Just my opinion.

I like Wiacek's inks much more here than on Alpha Flight, but probably because I have less emotional attachment to this book than AF.

I love, love, LOVE this run, and I curse the heavens for the fact that it was so short. JB and the Hulk seem very much like a perfect match.

This really was a "back to basics" approach (New Mexico! Rick Jones! Betty! General Ross!), and I would have loved to see the retro-Kirby Hulk that JB was planning to (re)introduce.

And, right from the start, JB started getting into the complexities of the Banner/Hulk relationship (by taking awesome advantage of the idea that Banner exerts a moderating influence over the Hulk). If he'd been allowed to proceed, I'm sure it would have been much better (and truer to the character) than the psychobabble that Peter David buried the character with.

Also, the Hulk is really scary in this run, too. Even before Banner's persona is sucked out of him, he kills a deer (whereas before, he would have called it "Bambi")!

I remember being thrilled when JB took over the Hulk, especially as his treatment echoed the Kirby/Ditko collaborations of the original 6-issue run.

Seeing these pages brings a lot of those feeling back.
