Hi JB, the cover art for the Cosmican Con ‘79 recently sold on eBay:

Were there any stories to go with this one?

Nope. Just a bit of whimsy!

Love that kinda fun in sketches, like Storm tapping her foot at Ms. Marvel’s new costume, or the pencil sketch of Rog-2000 sitting on his own detached head—always worth a good chuckle.

Thanks!

In another life JB had a great career at Mad magazine!

Has John Byrne drawn Irving Forbush?

Yes. Yes he has.

I like it, I like it!

Yep, JB's drawn Forbush Man a few times in that series.

How can a person be sure of the authenticity of this piece?

How can a person be sure of the authenticity of this piece?

*******************************************

Besides having JB confirm the piece?  I did ask the seller for any provenance.  They replied that Roger Slifer had acquired the art from JB, and that it was framed at his home until his estate decided to let it go.  In addition, I asked the seller if he could show a pic of the back to see if the inks had bled through, to which he added.

Any thoughts on what else could be done to confirm?

I’ve seen enough forgeries to be wary of “confirming” something that I am not actually holding in my hand. This piece looks like something I would have done at that vintage. Best I can offer.

Sadly, it’s always a roll of the dice. I have a few pieces in my diverse accumulations that may not be what they were claimed to be (a small dinosaur fossil, for instance), but since it’s unlikely that it will ever be disproven, I can content myself with it being what it is.

I read an interview of Neal Adams and Will Eisner where they agreed you
couldn’t really do good “little foot” cartooning (meaning realistic drawing)
until you’d become good at “big foot” cartooning.

This “rule” is supported by the fun “big foot” stuff that can be seen in John
Byrne’s early career.

To this day, I still feel the cartoony stuff is my “real” style.
