What a weird critique. Some of the best eyeballs in comics are in Elsewhen.
I can picture several from memory.

JB: "...One of the first to comment pointed out that "none of the characters have eyeballs"..."

This is not supporting that person's comment, as it was apparently a criticism, but that comment reminds me of  my first exposure to the "new" X-Men.

I believe I mentioned this before in the forum, but oddly enough, for someone my age, my first exposure to the X-Men was NOT the "new" team, but the original five. I read my first X-Men story, a reprint of "X-Men" #3, in the trade paperback collection, "Marvel's Greatest Superhero Battles." I next read those team members in a Treasury-Sized reprinting of "Marvel Team-Up" #4, where they appeared during the era between the original team and the newer team.

When I finally discovered "The Uncanny X-Men" team with Wolverine, etc., it was issue #122 of the series. I loved it, especially the artwork (by some artist I believe we all know here). But one thing that struck me, that I first noticed when I saw the Dave Cockrum illustrated character corner box, was how... odd... they characters appeared to me. But, in a good way!

See, for a kid my age, sure, I was used to the whole "eyes disappear when wearing a mask" thing, but on the corner box I first noticed a woman with no mask, but had wide blank eyes, and blue-skinned demon character with large bright yellow eyes, Cyclops, whom I was familiar with, but wearing his new visor, and of course had no visible eyes, and Wolverine wearing a mask which followed tradition of not showing pupils. Only Banshee looked "normal." Unlike the person critiquing "Elsewhen," though, this didn't bother me, it fascinated me. They new X-Men looked very cool to me, and the stranger that look, the cooler it was.

I believe it's something to do with both the context of the era as far as how mainstream superheroes typically looked then, at least in regard to my personal experience. As a rule, if a character was maskless, they had eyeballs... at least, if they weren't some alien or monster. The only character I really knew about as a youth that was eyeball-less was Little Orphan Annie. But, again, the way those X-Men looked was a draw for me, not a bad thing.

In respect to "Elsewhen," however, I don't understand the person's comment. First, the period I was discussing from my childhood, the look of those heroes was not the norm. Nowadays, more superheroes are drawn eyeball-less than not!  So, it's a weird thing to note, anymore.

And if this person is referring to "normal" characters in the story, I don't -- excuse the pun -- see it. All the non-powered humans have eyeballs, certainly, and drawn quite well! In fact, when I first read that comment in this post, my mind immediately thought of a scene with Kitty Pryde, wearing a mask, coincidentally(!!), whose eyes we see in extreme close up as she is falling through the sky before Nightcrawler teleports to catch her.
