People, especially Democrats, forget George W. Bush was Trump before Trump. All the idiocy, the racism, the homophobia, the profiteering, the criminality, the incompetence and the contempt for Americans was in full flower, yet somehow Democrats have convinced themselves Bush respected bipartisan DC norms throughout every crime and failure. They’ll look back on Trump the same way.

George W. is the reason I stopped thinking of myself as a Republican. The Party of Lincoln was just no more. But, bad as Bush was, Trump is worse.

I live in Washington, DC, in Upper Northwest, very near the peak of the DC "diamond" -- right at the top of Rock Creek Park, for those of you familiar. I'm about seven miles north of the Federal Area, where the monuments and the Orange Crisis are. Most DC residents don't go down there -- too many tourists and lawyers.
During the UFC thing and Reflecting Pool peeling, I rode my bike down to see for myself. What a nightmare. What a horrendous bad dream. The construction, the destruction, the garbage, the red hats, riding down the National Mall, I felt shame for the nation.
And he's cutting down the cherry blossoms to make a golf course -- and no one will stop him. He's already tearing down the Kennedy Center, removing art from the grounds -- and no one will stop him.
Will we live through Trump? Will DC still stand?

Tom, my family lives in DC and my sister is one of the people coordinating the various heritage and preservation organizations litigating against Trump, and the front row seat has been enraging. (As has been the doxxing, swatting and threats against my sister.)
The Supreme Court's interference has been unconscionable. The latest setback they inflicted was ruling that while Trump's destruction of the East Wing and ballroom/bunker project is illegal, only Congress has standing to sue, so oh well, tough shit American people. They have taken every opportunity to enable the criminality of Trump and the Republican Party. Their goal is to stay every lower court injunction until they eventually throw up their hands and declare all the cases against Trump regrettably moot because he's gone too far to stop.

I sometimes wonder if SCOTUS is giving in on the construction stuff just because it's clearly the stuff that most easily keeps him distracted/happy. Without a doubt, this Court is more than happy to keep the old school GOP agenda stuff rolling through, but seems to get a little tepid when it comes to the Trumpiest stuff. Yes, there are some full-on Trumpers up there (Thomas and Alito), but I think the other conservative justices are mostly waiting for the Trump era to end so they can deal with dismantling the Federal Government on their own terms and schedule.
