JB - When you put a double page splash into your early work, was the layout of which pages would be ads preset and you had to work around that? Or could single page ads and letters pages be shuffled at the printing plant to give you more freedom?
And after JB answers, let’s see some of your favourite double page splashes!

All of the above, really. That spread is not a good example, btw. It was pages 2 & 3, which, except for one brief time at Charlton, were always free of ads.

I own the double splash from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World issue 11…in the
published book they put an add in between the two pages! D’oh!!!!

There must have been earlier examples when my parents would buy me comic books... but in the spring of '81, a close friend of my mother's gave me a box of his old '60s comics that had been gathering dust up in his childhood home's attic. (Judging by his age at the time, and the vintage of mostly-Marvel issues, I can only guess he was collecting well into his college years.)
This double-splash (by Jim Steranko), from CAPTAIN AMERICA #113, is the first one I recall really knocking my socks off.

An important lesson I learned early on is that double page spreads, spectacular as they may sometimes be, advance the story by only one panel!

Several. At least two of Latveria.Plus, in addition to standard double pagers, I did a few with multiple panels, like punching Ben thru the supermarket.

Note the CCism on that spread. Gladiator is standing behind Lilandra with his mouth closed, while she is gesturing with her mouth open. CC gives dialogue to Gladiator. And example of his (unconscious?) need to write against the art.

(Amusing side note: working plot-pencils-script, Bernie Wrightson told me he noticed whenever he drew someone with an open mouth, Len Wein would give them dialog. So he started drawing EVERYONE with their mouths open!)

I can't figure out how to upload in here without it always timing out. So I will say the two-page splash for X-Men, "The Submergence of Japan" in Uncanny X-Men 118. That two-page splash is one of the most gorgeous things I've seen in comics.
