I'm glad to hear you're doing better JB

If you come from a Dutch background like I do, black licorice is thought of as more of a food group than a tasty treat.

Black licorice contains glycyrrhizin which can cause a drop of potassium levels (like JB wrote), abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, and heart failure. If you have a heart condition like I do, it's a bit of a problem 'cause I LOVE black licorice.

In 2020 a Massachusetts man died of heart failure while consuming a bag of licorice, Hersey had a lawsuit placed against it because there was no warning on it's black licorice packaging including Twizzlers. I believe the lawsuit is still ongoing.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue, I imagine the initial sudden
onset of symptoms was quite frightening.

I had come around to the belief that you were an unstoppable force of
nature, bound to outlive us all, but if licorice is your kryptonite, maybe, just
maybe, you are human after all.

Glad you are on the mend, JB. I'm not a fan of black licorice but I do remember getting sick as a kid eating too much of it because there was nothing else in sight!

Glad you're ok J.B. your story has educated me. My 85 year
old mum can't eat liquorice because of various age related
issues, and people often buy her a box of Liquorice
Allsorts for birthday's and Christmas. Knowing i have a
sweet tooth, she passes them on to me. So in future i will
ration my intake when she gifts me them.

OK, firstly I’m glad you’re ok JB!
My Mom had a potassium issue, but hers was ‘too much’. (Bananas) (every
day for breakfast and lunch).

Secondly, I found that it’s only the Black stuff. (I have a red vine craving
every once in a while.)

Another search found that jelly beans use anise instead of the
glamahyxentum that’s bad for you.

How did you come about snacking so regularly on (of all things) black licorice, JB?

I once "overdosed" on raw carrots, which caused me to crumple with stomach cramps.
