Now comes a coupla weeks of figuring my way around all the superfluous new bells and whistles. Plus, busy, ugly interface.

I tend to wait out until my iphone no longer becomes truly app-functional to upgrade it, and mostly I just grab an "older-newer" one from my kids and let them get the actual new one.

Apple products are good for they are really durable. I've changed my iPhone only after it has really broken. Same with pads, laptops and iMacs. Before iPhone I had Samsung phone and it usually lasted only about a year. Same with computers. Our laptop is from 2013 and is still functional.

If it's a new one with all the glass stuff, try this:
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > and turn on Reduce Transparency.
It's a little closer to the previous style. Easy to turn back off if you dislike it.

I’ve been considering getting a new iPhone as well as my current one is quite long in the tooth. It’s an iPhone 8 Plus. It doesn’t get the latest updates and the battery life is significantly reduced. That said it still functions and I’m way too cheap to spend that kind of money so I’ll probably hang on a bit. I mostly surf on my iPad anyway.

I just recently got a new Samsung android phone (Galaxy S25 Ultra) a few weeks back. I was in desperate need of a new phone, so I splurged. I'm still trying to figure it out the newer functions...

My wife and son recently got new Samsung phones and I inherited my son’s old one. New phones tend to arrive when old ones stop functioning, but I needed to buy a phone after a policy change at work meant that I could no longer use my work phone for personal use, while my wife’s phone went out of support (it was that old). So, new phones all around.
I hate that new phones no longer have a 3.5 mm jack (although my hand me down does, yay!), and am convinced that this is a major reason we now suffer speaker conversation, tv shows and music on public transport. The fact new phones don’t come with Bluetooth headphones, unless in a deal, makes this situation even more likely.

My dad is still using his iPhone 5. Nothing on it will update anymore and he’s constantly complaining that his phone won’t let him do the stuff it used to do anymore. We’ve been telling him for years now to upgrade but he just won’t do it.

Wow. He must have like 30 minutes of battery life by now! And clearly he doesn't rely on banking apps.

Hmm. Looking at my mail I realized I had not received anything on my main account since I gotthe phone. When I clicked on the screen I got a window inviting me to “verify” the account. Clicked on that and was taken to Utilities. Asked for my preferred phone number. Provided and clicked on “Continue”—only to be informed there was a problem connecting with the server. (One of those annoying error windows where the only choice is “okay”.Clicked that, and was taken to the previous window. Click the big X in the corner and…. nothing. Clicked “Continue” and back to the error window. “okay” again. But that window that asked for my phone number will not let go. I can move back to my desktop, but I can’t access Utilities. A trip to the Apple Store (real world) apparently in my future. And it’s a long way! Humph!

I hate setting up new phones. We have lost two sets of WhatsApp messages by doing exactly what the app told us to do. Being stuck in loops just causes rising levels of frustration.
