It’s gratifying to see people so enthusiastic about my bygone days, but honestly, I am so dissatisfied with my own work, I really wish it would fade away!

I am sorry JB. As an artist, I understand how one looks back on their own work and I have read that you don't have fond memories of working on this, but you must realize what this particular work meant for so many of us. As a nine-year-old seeing the Superman movie in 1978 I was always so disappointed when I would still occasionally pick a Superman comic off the rack and having it look and read like a comic from the 1950's still. Especially when we were getting the likes of Miller on Daredevil, Simonson on Thor and yourself on X-Men/Fantastic Four to say the least. It was your Superman that saved him and to many of us is still the definitive Superman. You may disagree with that fact, but the fact remains. YOU are the one who finally delivered a Superman I, and many, many others were glad to pick off the rack. I hope you do have some solace in at least knowing that (plus I am sure the money don't hurt none!). I for one, can't wait for this to come out even if it can't replace my old trade since it's been signed by you. ;)

It's the 40 years on the cover that gets me.
I'm remembering 1988 and Superman celebrating 50 years, and I couldn't get my young head round how long ago 1938 was.
Here I am looking at this and realising how quickly time has passed since 1986...

I was born in 1950, Superman was born in 1938. When I took on Superman he was 50, and I was 38.

I totally respect your sentiment, JB. I’d imagine it’s a kind of burden to bear, in some ways. Your Superman IS Superman for many of us. As is your Wolverine, FF, etc.
And I’m guilty of feeding the beast. Whatever format they release your stuff in next, I’m in line like a good buying another copy.
Hopefully the continued revisiting of your material by the publishers yields you a nickel or two.
