...  We are not alone—but we might as well be.

I'm not sure the lack of "real time" communication with an extraterrestrial civilization would be as disappointing as suggested. I suspect it would have the same characteristic in tone as some of our more revelational archeological discoveries about past civilizations, only with far greater impact. Remember how people lost their minds for years after the Tutenkamen discoveries? And we had known somewhat about ancient Egyptian culture already beforehand.

To follow up with an answer to the question I posed - many of the things we have on Earth that feel "rare" to us are incredibly common even floating in space. There's abundant sources of water in space. Plentiful quantities of precious metals can be found even in asteroids.

The rare resource here relates to organic materials. Trees? Can't find those in space. Plants? Of course not. Of course, any advanced lifeforms seeking out those resources would know that destruction or conquest would make them non-replenishing commodities.

False equivalency.

"Remember how people lost their minds for years after the Tutenkamen discoveries?" No. I don't. How old are you? You must have a remarkable memory for someone your age.

Oh, come on Steve! We all use “remember” to refer to things we did not experience directly.
