That is a really interesting thought, Vinny.

It wasn't a retcon to invent the character and appearance of Logan. That was a blank that had been left and needed filling.

Probably this has happened to other characters (villains or supporting cast) who appeared briefly here or there and then were picked up later by other writers?

Hawkeye would seem to qualify.

First he had three appearances as a foe for Iron Man in TALES OF SUSPENSE #57, #60 and #64 (September, 1964 - April, 1965, and all by Stan Lee and Don Heck).  Then he showed up uninvited to apply for Avengers membership in THE AVENGERS #16 (May, 1965) and an origin involving the Swordsman was added in THE AVENGERS #19 (August, 1965).  But it wasn't until THE AVENGERS #64 (May, 1969 by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan) that we actually learned his full name as his origin was fleshed out a bit more.

Quite a bit later on (in 1988), in the pages of SOLO AVENGERS (by Tom DeFalco and Tom Bright) they updated Hawkeye's origin to include Trickshot teaching him archery rather than the Swordsman.

The story goes that Hawkeye's real name was never used because the printing methods at the time were so crude that the ink would occasionally run and "CLINT" wasn't a name you wanted that happening to.

Hawkeye may be the only recurring comic book character named Clint, now that I think about it. The printing concerns could have easily been avoided by using a different name! Or after the fact, pulling a "Bob Banner" to change it.

Or just instructing the Letterer to widen the space between the letters. And the printing methods weren't crude, but appropriately chosen for the product.

Reminded again of Roger Stern’s oft declared intent to create a character named CLINT FLICKER.

0 what scalliwags we were!

I often wonder what could've been had JB done the first WOLVERINE miniseries instead of Claremont and Miller.

We would certainly been spared the Japanese/Yakuza storyline, right?

The Japanese elements were introduced during my time, a result of Chris and me both reading SHOGUN.

Had I done that first mini my inclination might have been to head to the Great White North, but I cannot say so with absolute certainty.

I’ve often wondered about this, and this thread seems as good a place to
ask as any.

JB, how did you and Chris Claremont work together for so long, over so
many titles, because it really does seem to be that you approached
characters from completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

And yet we have X-Men, Iron Fist, Marvel Team Up, Star Lord, and possibly
others that do not come to mind.
How did you survive through all those, until that fateful day when Colossus
pulled a tree stump from the ground?

I love both your work, both separately and together, but I often ask myself
this question.

I thought Guy’s personality was the result of brain damage?”
****************
Correct.   I’m not sure why, but Englehart issued a clarification earlier this week that brain damage changed Guy into the blunt instrument the Guardians of Oa wanted during Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Ahhh, what could've been!

I still enjoyed the mini but was surprised Miller was picked as the artist. ('Course, he was a fan favorite at the height of his DAREDEVIL run!)
