I'll have to go back and do some deep thinking on all the titles I seemed to collect the most, but for me, it kind of boils down to this:

1980 - 1984:  Almost a complete a total Marvel zombie

1984 - 1986:  Mostly Marvel, with some DC titles, and a smattering of independents (for better or worse, SECRET WARS jumpstarted comic collecting as my full-time hobby)

1986 - 1987:  Made the move to DC titles when JB jumped ship--DC started to outnumber Marvel for the first time, for me.

1987 - 1988:  Almost exclusively DC, any Marvel titles I bought were practically nil; overall collecting was at a low ebb

1989:  JB's return to Marvel, and Batman's advent to the theaters helped skyrocket my interest in comics all over again--kind of went nuts collecting for the next 3-4 years!

I was deep into the hobby from 1982-1987.

FF (JB)
Alpha Flight (JB)
Hulk (JB)
New Mutants (Bill S. and beyond)
X-Men (~175) - I really liked it up through the Mutant Massacre. Longshot joined and I left.
Peter Parker, Spectacular Spider-Man (I may have enjoyed these stories more than ASM for some reason - black suit. black cat)
Iron Man
Secret Wars (I enjoyed it! apologies...)
Daredevil (Harlan Ellison's #208 was great)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (B&W stuff)
GI Joe
Star Wars
Avengers (Buscema's run)
Superman (JB) - The one with the Phantom Stranger was my favorite.

It never crossed my mind then to buy a Batman comic for some reason. Batman was my earliest favorite childhood character. Did the Batman covers stink in the 80s or something? They didn't catch my eye, that's for sure.

I started off the early 1980s enjoying the DeMatteis/Zeck/Beatty run on Captain America, especially the Deathlok issues...

But of course, like many here, it was the Byrne Fantastic Four run that defined my perception and enjoyment of the Marvel Universe.

Some memorable issues/covers for me include:

The Uncanny X-Men by Claremont, Byrne, Austin  & various artists.
The Invincible Iron Man by Michelinie, Layton, JRjr & Bright.
The Amazing Spider-Man by Stern & Romita jr.
Captain America by Stern, Byrne & Rubistein
The Fantastic Four by John Byrne.
Daredevil: Born Again by Miller & Mazuchelli.
Batman: Year One by the same team.
Watchmen by Moore & Gibson
Secret War by Shooter, Zeck & Layton
Various titles by Bill.Mantlo: Spectacular Spider-Man, Rom, Hulk, etc...
Gruenwald's Captain America.
Amazing Spider-Man by Michelinie & Various.
Byrne & Stern's Superman runs, but i discovered them in the early 90 when i moved to the original version, since DC wasn't published in France after Crisis, we didn't got the relaunch.
And i'll add Crisis, by the way.
And Hulk by Peter David.

The X-Men, Iron Man and Stern's Spider-Man are my top favorites, with also the issues of the FF with She-Hulk.

That's for american comics, but the french super-heroes series Photonik and Mikros are also favorites of mine

James reminded me of the Pollard Thor run, I need to add that to my list.
The whole Ring of Power, Siegfried, Celestial's storyline with a couple Wagner operas thrown in there. It was a romp to occasionally escape into Asgard lore.

Definitely agree with some of the recurring favorites, including the X-Men up through 175, Fantastic Four, New Teen Titans, Simonson's Thor, early New Mutants, Justice League International, Giffen's Legion of Superheroes (especially the Great Darkness saga), Elfquest, Watchmen, and Dark Night Returns.

I too followed everything JB did, and loved his output in the 80's.  I understand how he feels about how his time at DC turned out, but the stories he created there were amazing.  Of course I haven't come across a book that JB has done that I haven't enjoyed.  I like some better than others, but they're all enjoyable.

X-Men was tolerable through 209, but I strongly dislike the cover to X-Men 210, detest the Marvel Mutant Massacre, and think most of what follows is dreck, though I still collect it to this day.

My absolute favorites from the 80's that I haven't seen anyone mention yet:
Grimjack (still my favorite of all time)
Elementals (the Willingham issues)
Cerebus (definitely went off the rails towards the end and Sim alienated a lot of his fans, but High Society and Church And State are some of the best comics ever.
