That’s half of what I said.

Speaking as a lapsed Catholic, I cannot get my head around the general good standing that the Church manages to maintain.

How much sanctioned/protected child sexual abuse would we tolerate in any institution anywhere?

Church sexual abuse survivors call on the next Pope to do what Francis would not. And the will most likely call on the Pope after him to do the same. Etc.

Thanks for the progress, Francis. March on, progress. March on!

Sad that, for all his failings, Francis was still one of the better ones.

This makes me uneasy as the Church could very easily appoint a regressive backslider.  Do I feel like Francis was a progressive hero?  Not in the least but at least he wasn't always railing against homosexuality and abortion, despite his opposition.

I read "Conclave" earlier in the year and while it's pure fiction, it did shed light on how very different candidates could be and how many hardline, old-school conservatives are amongst the cardinals.

I think Cardinal Dolan is dangerous and hope he doesn't receive any votes.

Dolan probably is more representative of modern Catholicism than Francis, much as Biden was an outlier and Vance/Alito are more in tune with the hardcore 'base'.

Which is really sad, Dave.  When I was really young, it was the era of folk Mass and Brother Sun/Sister Moon and all that is gone and replaced by hardnoses and discrimination.

I hadn’t thought about this. What a shit show. Yes, the Opus Dei fuckery is
at high tide. If that kind of asshole becomes Pope, he will likely agitate for
nuclear war or some other heinous policy of Armageddon.

Where have you gone, Francis? All is forgiven!

He was a good egg indeed.

And he actually did a lot on child abuse, banishing a lot of priests and the like. He also was putting a lot of pressure on Opus Dei.

Was he an ideal progressive hero? No, that's impossible for a man in his position.

Fortunately he also thought ahead and promoted a lot of like minded Bishops to Cardinals, so it's likely that the next Pope is going to be aligned with his views.

Let's hope.

Honest question from an atheist: How much power does the Catholic Church hold in the modern day?  Despite the recent “anti-Christian bias” bullshit the administration is selling as red meat for its core voters, the Catholic Church isn’t a big thing here in the States.  But I’m not so stupid as to know that it’s not the same for other nations. So how powerful is it still?

It really comes down to whether or not the new Pope is capable of wielding the Spear of Destiny.

Well, there are cities in Europe where the Catholic Church is the single biggest owner of real estate, and is collecting massive rent money.

THE GODFATHER PART III is actually about this.

As for the Catholic Church's influence and/or power and for this Pope in particular you only need to see some footage of the events from this past week to know it's pretty big.
