'The American Way' probably sounded too 'Joe McCarthy' after the 50s.

I learned the phrase from the TV show that ran 6 seasons, starting 1952. That goes deep into the era when McCarthyism becomes emblematic for corrupt government (McCarthy was officially censured in 1954 and dead by 1957).

Superman's tie to the "American Way" was alive and strong through the Kennedy era, but you can see it getting far less of an emphasis by the time DC sent Green Lantern and Green Arrow on a hunt to rediscover what happened to the "American Dream".

Those influential O'Neil/Adams stories cast a heavy shadow within the comic book world and they were only a few years old when Superman vs. Spider-Man came out.

"Truth, Justice and the American Way" was coined for the 1942 Superman radio show.

Interesting. Right at the height of the U.S.'s involvement in World War II?Sure, it makes sense that it started that way.

When Roger Stern and I were working on CAPTAIN AMERICA we used to say he stood for Truth, Justice and the American Dream.

It was the Seventies, and the American Way was on shaky ground. But no one could fault the American Dream.

Fast forward some 20 years later and Tom DeFalco and Brent Anderson created the MC2 hero (and the inheritor of Cap's shield) American Dream.
