JB: When I said I wanted to use Darkseid as a main Superman villain, DC
was initially resistant. “Nobody cares about those characters!”

**

Nothing to see here, just another time John Byrne quietly nudged the entire
universe in another direction.

It’s difficult to properly account for all the influence you’ve managed to
have. It is more than it seems and I believe it is in the realm of giants like
Roy Thomas. (Not sure how to test such a thing, but this one example alone
is so big.)

The two books I miss the most are Grimjack and the Elementals.  As it's unlikely the creators will have an opportunity to craft new stories with these properties, it would be awesome to see someone continue them faithfully to the original.

Speaking of the Sons of the Tiger, I am glad to see that the original White Tiger will be part of the new DAREDEVIL Disney+ show.  Not only was he Marvel's first Hispanic superhero, Hector Ayala was the first Puerto Rican superhero, co-created by George Perez who was of Puerto Rican descent.  Ayala died over 20 years ago in a DAREDEVIL storyline.

I really wonder if people put any thought behind big important moves like killing off the very first of anything--just for shock effect?  Only to replace him numerous times, twice with women--and not calling them "Tigress."  Not that we can't play with the language a little bit, but it feels weird not to use the female version of a word for a heroine when it's at least as good as the male version.

Likewise, JudoMASTER over at DC was replaced by a woman, without changing the name.  It just feels political, not artistic.  Creator Frank McLaughlin poured his heart and soul into the character for Charlton Comics and somebody decades later decides to screw with it.

So, yeah, for Perez's sake or McLaughlin's sake...or for Ditko's sake, bring back--

WHITE TIGER
JUDOMASTER
BLUE BEETLE (as designed by Steve Ditko)
THE CREEPER (following Ditko's original premise)

Would love to see Union Jack, Spitfire and Captain Britain
in modern day U.K. centric stories.

Re: Darkseid

It’s somewhat sad to note that DC had used Darkseid before I got there, but mostly as a punching bag.

I agree, but preferrably if they put Spitfire in something closer to her original costume. I'm glad Union Jack's Captain Britain knockoff costume didn't last.

(Ahem) Giant-Man (ahem)

As the Thing pointed out to him, Goliath was a bad guy!

Yeah, Union Jack and White Tiger are great calls.

I'll throw in Night Raven too.

Unfortunately, many of the characters we're mentioning were killed off or retired and replaced by younger or more diverse versions -

Bill Foster/Giant-Man --> Tom Foster/Goliath
Brock Jones/Torpedo --> Michiko Musachi/Turbo
Henry Pym/Giant-Man --> Raz Malhotra/Giant-Man
Hector Ayala/White Tiger --> Angela Del Toro/White Tiger
Chuck Chandler/3D Man--> Delroy Garrett/3D Man

This in addition to all the characters (Black Knight, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Britain, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Hulk, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Thor, Wasp, etc.) that have more than one person running around under the same name.

"House of Ideas."

Yay.

Now I’m really confused.  Maybe DC was confused too.  DC made Darkseid the big villain of the Super Powers Team cartoon and toy line in 1984.  And in 1986, they told JB no one was interested to Darkseid??
