I “invented” the game of “Six Degrees of Separation” in my early teens. It was my version of counting sheep, and since I knew almost nobody it often required some extreme mental gymnastics.

As I got older, and actually started meeting famous people, I was able to shorten some of my chains considerably!

One that was a challenge, though, and kind of indirect, was linking myself to Abraham Lincoln. This was the best I could manage:

Christopher Reeve (via SUPERMAN IV) to Katherine Hepburn (they’d worked together on Broadway) to Cary Grant (PHILADELPHIA STORY) to Raymond Massey (ARSENIC AND OLD LACE) to H. G. Welles (visited the set of THINGS TO COME) to John Hay (Lincoln’s secretary) to Lincoln.

But this morning, I was thinking about having met William Shatner, who was a guest on just about every TV drama in the Fifties and early Sixties. Did he appear on DR KILDARE with Massey?

Yup. So lop off the first three names on my chain. Yay!

My having met just this one person who knows Bill Clinton has likely created for me more "connections" than I could imagine!

Yeah. I used to work with a lady that was Al Gore Sr’s personal
assistant/secretary until his death. That sure removes a lot of degrees.

And, I’ve met John Byrne, so…

I think it's amazing how connected everyone is. Despite not "knowing" anyone special I know people who know people. Every town seems to have someone who played professional sports, works/worked in the media, or works/worked in Hollywood. And of course, those of us here know all the comics connections!

This has me thinking about all the comics pros I’ve met and really, who all
they might know or have met. Just meeting JB puts me one step away from
all sorts of people. Having met Claremont, that’s one step away from
George Lucas, George RR Martin, John Belushi and who knows who else?

In music, as a teenager, I had a 'family tree'
that had Brian Eno at its centre.
I used to love expanding that tree. Pretty
much went to everyone I liked in music, and
many beyond.

My friend's godmother is Kitty Pride, so I am connected to everyone in the Marvel Universe.

I worked with the daughter of Colin Powell in the late 90’s.  That’s the political connection.  I also worked intimately with James Gunn for a season of television so, among other entertainment luminaries I’ve worked with, I’ve got that covered too!

My wife and I have done a bunch of community theater work over the years... our biggest "one degree" of separation from someone of note is a local older actor/director friend of ours, who has been close friends with Morgan Freeman for 50+ years.

The way I understand it, our friend worked behind the scenes of "The Electric Company" back in the day and struck up a strong friendship with Freeman ever since.  I would imagine at this point we could connect Mr. Freeman to just anyone else out there!

When I was nine I was in a receiving line to greet Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Edmonton as part of a royal tour of Canada. When I “invented” Six Degrees a few years later she was always my starting point.

It was surprisingly unproductive. I didn’t really know enough about HRH’s activities to be sure who she might have met.
