I “invented” the game of “Six Degrees of Separation” in my early teens. It was my version of counting sheep, and since I knew almost nobody it often required some extreme mental gymnastics. As I got older, and actually started meeting famous people, I was able to shorten some of my chains considerably! One that was a challenge, though, and kind of indirect, was linking myself to Abraham Lincoln. This was the best I could manage: Christopher Reeve (via SUPERMAN IV) to Katherine Hepburn (they’d worked together on Broadway) to Cary Grant (PHILADELPHIA STORY) to Raymond Massey (ARSENIC AND OLD LACE) to H. G. Welles (visited the set of THINGS TO COME) to John Hay (Lincoln’s secretary) to Lincoln. But this morning, I was thinking about having met William Shatner, who was a guest on just about every TV drama in the Fifties and early Sixties. Did he appear on DR KILDARE with Massey? Yup. So lop off the first three names on my chain. Yay!
