A lesson in what can happen to characters when their creator leaves them. Apparently they’re ALL mutants now. In my day, NONE of them were.

(“Mutant”, by the way, I consider pretty much the LAZIEST origin. After the original X-Men, of course.)

And I would think creating origin stories would be one of the funnest parts for a writer, too.

I'm hearing that old Dr. Pepper jingle now as "I'm a mutant, he's a mutant etc...."

Maybe I could switch to Slade for Mama Weer All Muties Now.

Those Great Lakes characters were a lot of fun and pretty unique, I hope they haven't gone too 'dark' and serious/adult. :^(

That's a shame. They were interesting characters-- sad that they were reduced to a generic "they're all mutants" origin now.

And you’ll really want to avoid one character’s intro to the MCU.

I’ve seen Mr Immortal has been added to the MCU mix—poorly cast, albeit with an actor whose work I’ve enjoyed elsewhere.

The all Mutant thing was more of a one-off joke. I think it would be clever to do a story where they all find out they only thought they were mutants, but actually aren't.

Also, though I admit I've enjoyed some of the stories where the GLA are played for laughs, I would love to see a story where they're played totally straight. It has worked for other characters, after all.

Wasn't the Mutant thing done as an excuse to rename them Great Lakes X-Men? And they've gone through a few more names since then.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Spider-Man retrofitted to be a mutant during all of this nonsense?

I think the only time I’ve seen them played straight aside from their original Byrne issues of WCA, was in JLA/Avengers. They don’t have a big role, but they do help defeat Krona.

The GLA were intended to be kinda goofy. In some ways I created them as a challenge to the O So Serious segment of fandom.

I'll give you an update on the characters.

Mr. Immortal- In a new grouping above mutant where he is the sole member. And knew Deathurge, angel of death, since childhood.

Flatman- A gay mutant named Matt who made up the alias of Val.

Big Bertha- Retconned to be a mutant around 20 years ago and said that the only way she could lose the weight was vomiting. And more recently, she changed her legal name to Bertha Crawford and lives as a plus-sized model.

Doorman- A black man named DeMarr Davis who is a mutant and became an angel of death to replace Deathurge some years ago with a bunch of new powers.

Dinah Soar- Killed off straight away in GLA #1 in '05 and still dead now.
