Here's an interesting one!  The original by Gene Colan and Tom Palmer was delayed in the mail, so an emergency cover was pieced together with figures from previous issues on top of a photo of New York City.  The original was finally colored and used for the cover of a TwoMorrows magazine.

One of the most historic (in B&W and with new colors)...

Here's the original Marie Severin cover for CAPTAIN AMERICA #125 and the Marie Severin cover that ended up being used.  I'm a little surprised by this one--the first shows an exciting, more victorious Cap, while the second shows a rare defeated hero.  But I suppose that was the point.

Here's the original cover from HULK SPECIAL #1, which I believe is by Marie Severin (with or without Herb Trimpe?).  A lot of detail and nicely finished, but replaced by the simpler but more iconic Steranko version--which I can go into any Hobby Lobby today and buy a large canvas reproduction of that will fill half my living room wall!  But I guess Marie had "the last laugh" after all since she was called in to alter the Hulk's face.

I prefer all three rejected covers Eric shared in his last three posts. The fact that Ditko's original cover wasn't used is criminal.

Here's some original art by P. Craig Russell and the hardly different--but I would say more polished--final cover (with Clea added) by Dave Cockrum.

Wow, seeing that P Craig Russel image in isolation, I never would have guessed it was from the 70s. There's something in the style of the details in the inking that conjures the 90s Image style.

Here's an interesting example of (probably) a self-canceled cover!  It looks like Neal Adams didn't like the cover he did for this new collection of his non-Batman DC work--or at least he didn't like Robin's pose!  So, he did an overlay with a new In-your-face Robin.  I can't say that the new one is much better than the original--both would have worked fine, but I appreciate the extra effort!

I have that Dr. Strange Annual and would've preferred the unused Russell cover.

This one is sort of amazing!  As I understand it, for IRON MAN #23, the planned cover (by Marie Severin) was made an interior page and an interior page (the splash page, by George Tuska & Mike Esposito) was bumped up to be the cover!

Here's another MS. MARVEL (#19) example, where the Dave Cockrum/Bob Layton original was replaced by a John Romita Jr./Joe Rubinstein piece.
