X-Men Elsewhen made use of Dark Phoenix as a bad-guy who could come back. Did you get a sense of whether or not this would be a character you'd want to see return as often as the average member of the X-Men's rogue's gallery?

I had heard that, and it was amazing to see in Elsewhen- twice!
I guess what I was really trying to ask is if you had a sense for how many
issues would have to go by before you could imagine bringing Dark Phoenix
back again?
I sometimes get the feeling that I’ve really got a good question to ask you
here, then I ask it and find out I haven’t formulated the question to get
anything like the answer I thought I’d get. I end up wondering what made
me think it was such a great topic to begin with?

Would Dark Phoenix have ever returned independent of Jean Grey (i.e., by "possessing," or whatever the word would be, others in the future)?

At that point Dark Phoenix and Jean Grey were one person. The idea of Phoenix possessing Jean was suggested by Kurt Busiek after her death. Not sure we’d have got there on the original course.

At that point Dark Phoenix and Jean Grey were one person.
That was always my interpretation as well.
Guess that's why I never clicked with the possession thing, which has been the default since, I believe. (Admit to not following X-stuff closely in the past couple of decades)

Read closely, and you’ll find Chris was already writing Jean/Phoenix as separate entities even before Dark Phoenix was introduced. Not sure he was even aware he was doing it.

Precisely because of Mr. Claremont's writing I had from the beginning thought that Jean Grey had been taken over by whatever "Phoenix" was, using her as a host-body in some deep, dreadful way, a terrible cosmic-human symbiosis, so to speak. I did not think of Jean Grey having been transformed into "Phoenix" in the way that Sue Storm had been transformed in The Invisible Girl.

I erroneously assumed at the time that it was Mastermind's influence gone irrevocably wrong, beyond what he meant to do to Jean, like a Pandora's box.

Mastermind manipulating Marvel Girl ultimately beyond his control and unleashing the fiercest version of her telekinetic/telepathic powers (the latter of which might've defeated Juggernaut single-handedly back in #46) sounds like a great John Byrne story.
But working through this space-creature-amalgam Jean Grey/Phoenix thing, that's soooooo Chris Claremont's "X-Men." I'm certainly not disparaging the work in any way or denying that it (rightly) became legendary, with immense credit due to Mr. Claremont. Just personally wishing, oh, it had all been more traditional X-Men stories.
