As noted, I (along with a couple of editors) worked hard to keep Chris on model. The X-Men were supposed to deal with mutants, but before I arrived he had already laid the groundwork for demons and aliens. When I wasn’t there, as with the Annuals, for instance, he ran off with interdimensional barbarians and vampires*. Once I left the leash was fully off.

——-

* He did the same on IRON FIST, going elsewhere to create stories for Coleen and Misty that were, let’s say, not in keeping with how I thought of them.

It is serendipity that Kurt Busiak's idea worked so beautifully to make Elsewhen satisfying. Because of Jean Grey, Elsewhen was far more forward moving than any similar project. It's remarkable.

Metaphorically, Chris Claremont's choices left so much wiring simply cut off and left hot behind the drywall -- Elsewhen just had to reconnect a few things and, bango, the lights came back on!

I always wanted Mastermind to remain the drooling vegetable he was shown as being after Jean/Phoenix's clobbering of him. I was pretty annoyed when he came back and did the whole routine over again with that Madelyn character.

I did wonder if she had killed Emma Frost, that seemed ambiguous to me, but accepted Frost's return as a Dr. Doom (or Magneto, or the Black Cat) amazing escape. Still, both of those two surviving and back in action seemed to make Phoenix fallible and not so powerful after all... diminished her vengeance; but I suppose it would be said the 'Jean' part of her pulled those punches?

Marvel Comics, the House of Ideas.

Of course, it’s the SAME ideas, over and over.
