One of the things with Jack, it's that the power of his concepts and ideas were his strong point. And that's hard to measure while the stuff is happening.

Aside from the obvious Marvel situation, his New Gods books basically failed but the concepts prevailed and Darkseid is the main DC cosmic villain to this day. In the recent movies as well.

At least he got paid for the Super-Powers thing at the time.

JB,

Were there any specific projects that you had hoped to work with Jack on?

Not as such. There was always the hope that something random might pop up (as with the few times I inked Ditko) but nothing definite.

As I’ve often said, one of the few good things the proto-Image boys did was adopting Kirby as essentially their “mascot”, compelling their fans to accept and rehabilitate him.

+++

The one and only good thing they did, in my books.

I was being generous!

More great INVADERS covers!

INVADERS #4 by Jack Kirby & Frank Giacoia
Whether laid out by someone else or not, it's hard to believe that anyone but Kirby could bring such power and energy to a piece!

INVADERS #6 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott
I missed posting this Liberty Legion cover previously.  Nice to see Marvel's big three patriotic heroes all together--Miss America, Captain America, and the Patriot!

INVADERS #7 by Jack Kirby & Frank Giacoia (& John Romita touch-ups)
The primal power of Kirby comes through in this Baron Blood-centric cover.

INVADERS #14 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott
I'm sure I bought both series at the time, but it eluded me that these two issues of INVADERS were supposed to be a covert crossover with FREEDOM FIGHTERS # 8 & 9!  (Well, the FF half was a little easier to spot with a shield-slinging Americommando, the amphibious Barracuda, and especially Fireball and Sparky!)

INVADERS #15 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott
Yeah, if you didn't tell me that Captain Wings represented Black Condor, Spirit of 76 was an Uncle Sam stand-in, or Thunderfist was supposed to be the Marvel version of Human Bomb, I'd never have seen it!

Now I want to read those books! (I probably read them as a kid, but don’t remember doing so based on the covers.)

That Marvel provided sketches for the covers makes me ask: Does anyone know the common procedure at the time for having someone draw a cover to a book they aren't drawing?

Anyone want to start a Ditko in the '70s thread? I'm just completing his runs on Machine Man (even #19) and Shade, The Changing Man.

Feel free!  This one is almost done!  (As far as covers go at least!)

Here are some very exciting THOR covers!  People blame a deserting audience for diminishing sales, but I seriously wonder if sales wouldn't surge if they still had covers like these!

THOR #253 by Jack Kirby & John Verpoorten (plus Romita touch-ups)

THOR #255 by Jack Kirby & John Verpoorten (plus Romita touch-ups)

THOR #257 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott
Fantastic!

THOR #258 by Jack Kirby & John Verpoorten (plus Romita touch-ups)

And here's the rest of the 70's Kirby THOR covers!

THOR #249 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott

THOR #250 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott
Seriously, Kirby makes everybody else look boring!

THOR #251 by Jack Kirby & Joe Sinnott

THOR #252 by Jack Kirby & John Verpoorten (plus Romita touch-ups)
