On Twitter I came across a poll asking for the most
important sound effect in Marvel Comics. Sound effects
like "Thwip" and "Snikt" were ranking very high. This had
me pondering. Do we know who came up with "Thwip?" Who
usually comes up with the sound effects?

The writers usually come up with—and place—the SFX. One of many things that frustrated me about working with Chris. He would often position his sound effects so it looked as if characters were bumping into them.

Amazingly, we didn't get 'Thwip!' until ASM 36!

I'm a big fan of Thwip and onomatopoeia in comics in general.

There's so much tragedy and power in something so simple as SWIK!  SNAP!

I really enjoyed Frank Miller's use of onomatopoeia in The Dark Knight Returns. It was almost like an artform, with so much life to it (kudos also to John Constanza).

The contrast of the whupwhupwhup and the pokita pokita in the page below actually has a narrative element to it.

Couldn't find it online, but there's also the bit where the Batmobile attacks the mutants and there's a contrast between the cannons of the Batmobile and the Mutants' guns. The Mutants fire in one panel (BRAKKA BRAKKA BRAKK BLAM BLAM BLAM) and then the next panel the bullets ricochet off the Batmobile's armour plating (PWING PWING PWING) and the cannons fire back (POOM POOM). It tickled me when I first read it.

Walter Simonson famously pencilled in his own sound effects when he drew comics so that the page was one consistent design.

Such synergy on THOR. You couldn't tell which effects came from Walt and which came from John Workman.

“DOOM” from Walt’s THOR should be up there, for sure.

Now you've reminded me of McFarlane's use of the same in Spider-Man #1. Not a good memory!

1. Thwip
2. Snikt
3. Bamf

Does DC have any equivalents?

==============================================

The only one I can think of is "Ping! Ping! Ping! Ping!" for the Mother Box.

Time to share this, again. Something I put together for ELSEWHEN.

An assortment of classic Marvel SFX, plus a few of my own. Note that SNIKT and BAMF are represented! (There is a somewhat larger version of this file that includes THWIP.)
