The emotional ride of that story, just on the surface level of "Look! It's John Byrne's X-Men! Oh wait, no it's not!" was exhilarating. The fact that the story itself was unpredictable and (yet) steeped in Fantastic Four tradition was masterful.
The story-factory at the House of Ideas had plenty of smoke rising out of its chimneys back then, I tells ya!

Hard to believe it has been 40 years
already. I still remember the day I bought
it. I was eleven years old and picked it
up on the way to dinner at a restaurant
with my family. I was reading it in
between courses!

Reminds me of my experience with the second STRANGE TALES ANNUAL, that I picked up as my family headed out to dinner on my 13th birthday. (25¢!!)

Eep! I have a page of original art from that annual, Kirby/Ditko, and I’m suddenly realizing it was created almost sixty years ago!

I can actually remember the day I got my copy. My aunt had taken me to see a midday session of E.T., and I was allowed to grab a comic from the local newsagency. I narrowed it down to two books, this and the X-Men/Teen Titans crosover. Eventually the FF won out, as it had a lot of my favourite heroes in the one book. The Thing punching the bus into the air still brings a smile to face.

My RE-entry into comics. A friend had 250, which I loved and relit my comic passion. Went out to 7-11 that day to purchase 251.

It's an indication of our love of the medium that we can recall where we were when we bought some of these iconic issues. I got a stack of Byrne FF's (241 to 255) from the London Comic Mart that was held at Central Hall, Westminster. Came home with a load of MIller DD's too.
