The X-Men suffered the same fate as many before who sported black or black accented costumes. Blue had for decades been used as a highlight on black, ranging from Batman’s cape to Superman’s hair. The ever constant pressure of deadlines sometimes caused inkers to leave out large black areas—especially when they were working over layouts or breakdowns—and blacks began to disappear. Batman’s cape became blue. Spider-Man’s costume became red and blue. The X-Men started wearing yellow and blue. And those colors became canon.

When Neal Adams gave Angel a sleek new design during his run, he intended that it be shiny black, but once again blue was used as the highlight, and so the costume turned blue.

This is a difficult problem to combat. Dave Cockrum asked for white highlights on Storm’s costume, and many insisted that meant her 90% black costume WAS white. I asked for white highlights on Northstar and Aurora’s hair, and quickly their hair turned white.

Comics are full of “colors not found in Nature”, and this is especially true with highlights on black.

What a frustrating issue, JB... I certainly like the color schemes as originally intended... especially for Spider-Man costume. Storm’s costume confusion always irked me - I saw it become silver after the 3rd costume change.

I saw Storm's costume as possibly slightly metallic; a sort of black chrome.

Red feels a very non-aerial color. For someone whose main gig is flying, even without wings, blue feels much more a natural choice.

Action figures have sure come a long way in posability; remembering how the '70s Star Wars couldn't bend knees or elbows (Han had one bent arm though for shooting Greedo), nor turn at the waist (Jawas and Stormtroopers couldn't even turn their heads). The last figures I ever had were a couple from the mutant turtle line; Usagi Yojimbo and the warthog guy with a trashcan shield, and just shelf decoration.

They have come. Long way - but then so has the price.

Those 5 point articulation figures are around £10.

The multi-point figures are £16 minimum, rising to £20 in cases - that’s not
just natural inflation. It’s a reflection of the increased tooling required.

Mind you, the licensing costs also have a major part to play - Marvel 6 inch,
around £23, Star Wars 6 inch, around £26, but pushing £30 if they can get
away with it, the new NBA line looks to be around £50.

I've often wondered if when the Beast went hairy had he stayed grey (or highlighted grey) as he was originally colored (in Amazing Adventures)  would we not be so quick to call him and nightcrawler and Mystique, etc. blue?

Nightcrawler and Mystique were, as I remember, actually meant to be blue. The Beast was supposed to be black, but thar grey highlight was a k-tone, and more expensive.

There have been some strange adventures with color. There’s an issue of SILVER SURFER in which he is “disguised” in civilian clothes, including a fedora and sunglasses, and someone refers to his “white” face.

In NAMOR I asked for a character to have a deep tan. He came out purple.

And the Hulk turned green…..

So many others!

As much as I loved the work JB and Dave Cockrum did later on, I wish Nightcrawler still had that creepy look he had when he was introduced.

I also wish Spider-Man had kept the gangly, awkward black & red look he had under Ditko (as much as I enjoy Romita's red & blue Spider-Man).

And the Beast also certainly changed from the terrifying gray version we first got in Amazing Adventures.  But that one changed quite quickly.
