JB, here’s a silly question: you haven’t worked at Marvel for a bit, how do they know how to contact you? Is there a ‘phone list’ that floats around the Bullpen with your info on it?

Thank you.
I recently received a letter from a former employer (3 employers ago)  with whom I once had a pension, asking me to update my personal information. It occurred to me, had I moved, I would not have thought to update them. Now I know.

In the ramp up to the She-Hulk TV series premiere next week, it's so awesome
to see articles mentioning JB's run as influential to not just the series, but how
the character is defined in popular culture.

From The Direct: She-Hulk Director Teases Deadpool-Style Fourth Wall
Breaking

Head writer Jessica Gao: "What really made me fall in love with She-Hulk is the
John Byrne run where she famously breaks the fourth wall. And what I loved
about that run was how meta it was too. Because not only did she break the
fourth wall, she also argued with Byrne himself, she argued with the editor, and
they also made fun of the format and the tropes of comic books. So all of that
was really important for me to kind of seed into the series because I just feel
like you can't really do a true She-Hulk series if she isn't at least a little self-
aware."

Also, AV Club: She-Hulk primer: A crash course on
Disney Plus' newest star

From the article by Jenna Scherer: "When we first meet Jennifer in the comics,
she’s working as a criminal defense attorney, and even after her
transformation, she remains as dedicated to her law career as pummeling bad
guys into dust. She’s also very funny—a trait that became more apparent in
John Byrne’s Sensational She-Hulk series, which debuted in 1989. This was
also when She-Hulk first smashed through the fourth wall, offering cheeky
commentary directly to the reader—an M.O. later adopted by characters like
Deadpool and Fleabag. (“Okay, now. This is your second chance,” Jen says on
the cover of the first issue, in a nod to the low sales numbers of the original
She-Hulk run. “If you don’t buy my book this time, I’m gonna come to your
house and rip up all your X-Men.”) Judging by the trailers for the Disney+
series, in which Maslany sometimes speaks directly to the camera, this meta
tradition will continue onscreen."

Should I attempt a re-read before it starts?

I'd bet that won't be strictly necessary. As with most "adaptations" you're probably better off if you rely on nostalgia.

••

This from the article that specifically cites my using this technique in the comic!

Of course, at the time, I was accused of ripping off MOONLIGHTING---by using something that had been a theatrical trope for thousands of years!!

One thing of which we can be sure with so many fans, the first place they saw something is the first place it happened.

A glance at the trailer on YouTube gives some hope--tho I hate their interpretation of the Hulk. After all, if Bruce Banner is fully in control at all times, what's special about Jennifer?

Nice to see a more accurate rendition of the Abomination.

I recently re-read all of JB's She-Hulk. One of the things I find interesting about the character is that she's definitely a top B-Level character, who started out as nothing more than a female Hulk for legal reasons. So it's always been a challenge to make her something other than a female version of the Hulk. Though I have some of DAK's original run, I've never read any other She-Hulk comics besides JB's. Though it was a good enough run to stay in print for JB to come back to. And I don't know if the post-JB stuff was any good. Apparently, it wasn't popular enough to sustain the comic.

Finally, I like that JB did a "farewell" issue! You don't get to see enough of those!

It's a really difficult balancing act for many to do this kind of thing in comics, there are many that tried and fell flat, simply deflated the whole thing to the ludicrous but not really laughable, and I wonder how the tv series will do at it.

I bought the original 'Savage' series from the first issue into the early teens I guess (both mine and the comic). I've liked what I've read of the 'Sensational' comic series but it looks like I may have waited too long to get many of the issues. :^(

Anything that is referenced on tv or in a movie the dealers start testing to see how high they can go on now 'key' issues of 'importance'. I don't mid the odd $10 premium, but forget a hundred or more when there are hundreds of copies for sale, all 'hot, all 'rare'. Definitely hope for actual readers made though! That's what I'm doing and mostly why I'd want them.

Speaking of the fourth wall…I’m not an historian of the theater but I think I remember reading that, at least in American theater (the vintage in question was Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theater) the lines were delivered basically to the audience and not necessarily to other cast members. Not really breaking the fourth wall, I suppose, but it seems more monologue that acting.
