YouTubeNothing can compare to an actual visit, but for those who cannot manage that, this is at least something.

One of the smaller sadnesses in my life is the number of my friends who, when told of the Mutter and my own visit there, react with mingled horror and disgust. “Why would you want to see something like that??”

Because it’s educational because it’s historical because it’s interesting…that’s why.

Yeah—but some of these are people who can’t understand why I own a real human skull. (The rest react by asking if it’s someone I know.*)————- * No.

I've not visited the Mutter, but I have been fortunate enough to visit the Museo La Specola in Florence, for a similar experience.

A friend of mine traveled from Arizona to Philadelphia just to go there. I still haven't been but it's on my list of must-sees.

We have the surgeon's museum in Edinburgh which is a similar interesting visit (probably half the size though).

I took my daughter there when she about 8. She loved it. I left a little queasy.

The Mütter is one of my city's hidden gems...I've been there a few times, the last was on Mother's Day in 2017 or 2018...the weather was bad and my wife had been wanting to go there for years.
