I sell my art. Is that “drawing for money”?

Would you turn down a job from a comic-book company (or I guess any other company offering an art-related job) if it was something you wanted to do?

If so, I guess I'd say retired. Or like, someone else said, if you're still doing paid commission work then I'd say you're "freelance."

I can’t imagine not doing something I wanted to do!

Under New York law, its unemployment insurance program provides benefits to people who [inter alia]:
  • Have lost employment through no fault of their own
  • Are ready, willing and able to work, and
  • Are actively seeking work

Are any of those three true for you, JB?

Six other points to consider...

From US NEWS & WORLD REPORT:

 QUOTE:
There are signs and targets that can signal that you are prepared to retire, but they're not all about your age and how much money you've saved. "Getting ready to retire isn't just about finances, it's about being emotionally ready as well," says Jamie Hopkins, director of retirement research at Carson Group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Here's how to tell if you're ready to retire:

You are financially prepared.
You have eliminated debt.
You have a plan to cope with emergencies.
You have health insurance.
You have a social network.
You have something else to do.

All boxes checked?

Yes!   You are not retired.

I have not seen any commissions posted lately.   Have I been missing something?

Yep:

JB says he sells his art, not that it's strictly as commissions.

i wouldn't say that you are retired. I would say that you are "temporarily on hiatus". What I wanna see you do JB is ink a deal with either Netflix,Apple+,or Amazon Prime to adapt your creator owned comic book series to both animation and live action TV series and movies and have you be involved with the making of those projects. I want to see either an animated series or film adaption of TRIPLE HELIX and TRIO or a live action adaption of THE HIGHWAYS.

Just out of curiosity, JB... are you in fact drawing, just for fun?

If you are I think that's not "retirement", just working out for a new future project maybe even you don't know about :)

Since you work only when you want to, I would call you a man of leisure.
