I'd agree: Shooter does sound a bit weird about the covers.

I was just going through some of JB's seventies Marvel covers and the quality was there.

Randomly came across this from the 80s that I don't think I've ever seen before:

Obviously I knew JB did most of the OHOTMU deluxe covers, but I didn't realise he did this additional one.

Huh, I'd never seen that cover either. Neat!

Looking back, for whatever use THAT is, the early Uncanny X-Men covers drawn by JB include many outstanding examples-- including one of the all-time greats.

Considering what else was being published at the time, it's bizarre to consider these somehow sub-par.

That was the only issue of the first HANDBOOK series I ever had. I bought it
solely for the cover. it’s one of my favorite Wolverine images ever.

I am afraid I will irritate JB with this one, but seeing the above cover art reminded me of the Essential OHOTMU cover, where they managed to screw Cap's shield completely. I can't believe that no one in Marvel bothered to get it right...

Thanks X-MEN 114 cover was from a sketch by Dave Cockrum.

I've never heard of Romita's Raiders. Were they assistants that went over all the unapproved art?

To be fair, Cockrum's covers were exceptional.

**

I did not know that.
Were there any X-Men covers which you designed?

Who designed the famous X-Men 133 "Wolverine Lashes Out" cover?

JB: did you work directly on top of Dave Cockrum's sketch?

The sketch was on a sheet of typing paper. I was sent a copy.

Dave’s sketch was more dramatic than my finished drawing. X is cradling his head in anguish. I tried, but I could not pull off the action as Dave had drawn it. My version looked as if X had been shot in the eye with a BB gun.
