We hadn't really seen this Jean/Phoenix yet in ELSEWHEN, and she existed for such a relatively short span of time in UCXM---I think that's what hitting me so hard with a nostalgic vibe.

Boy that original Phoenix story-arc left such a weirdly deep mental scar on my young mind. You'd have thought having real-Jean "saved" here already would have purged it...but nope!

What makes the original death of Phoenix stand out, I think, is that it was completely unexpected and unpredictable. Even by Chris and me!

Unlike so much that came after—largely inspired by the death of Phoenix—the original story was not a stunt contrived to generate sales. Since nobody knew it was coming, we could not even solicit it in advance. And with so few moles and spies working for spoiler rags, for most people UNCANNY X-MEN 137 was….. the next issue after 136. It was double sized, but that was the only thing drawing attention to it.

So, when it happened readers had not had three months to speculate and dissect. The death scene was a genuine punch in the gut—for Chris and me as much as anybody else. Sadly, everything changed after that. “Death sells!” became the new mantra.

Gut-punch is an accurate description.

After the fact, all the weird "something is not right with Jean" foreboding that was just a set-up for Mastermind (and perhaps the Dark Phoenix transformation), took on a weird gravitas too. In retrospective I think it appeared to have been an elaborately constructed and epic tragedy---Hamlet in newsprint.

Looking back at pages 1 and 3 of this issue, I'm prompted to again say how much I'm enjoying Ororo's new look.

Keeping Storm's headpiece prevents the change from being too jarring, and the addition of open sandals works better than I would have thought. I still think having her go barefoot would make for a good look, but understand JB's reasons for not going that route.

Oh, and I miss the bracelets a little, but this is Storm, not Amazon. ;-)

The death of Jean Grey, which nobody at the time second-guessed as a fake-out, was especially a shock to us longtime readers who'd had an affection for her beyond the "new" team.

(My only other thought back then was that it was too bad Dr. Strange and the Silver Surfer couldn't have combined magic and the power cosmic to somehow safely "exorcize" the Phoenix from Jean Grey.)

Back in June I accidentally broke my toe walking barefoot in the house, and sandals wouldn't have protected me had been wearing them, so when I see how Storm is now shod, I do wince a bit! (This isn't a critique of her look.)

I am flapping like a flag in the wind right now.
Digging the Storm uniform outfit.
Loving the page layouts.
Smelling the graphite.
Thanks, JB.

Just checked - the Grey family house was trashed by the sentinels back in #7...

Great Ororo in today's page BTW - nice to get a look at the new costume from some angles we've perhaps not seen before!

That shot of Storm in the second panel is flawless!
JB seems to "get" the slight head turn or tilt that seems so natural, Bravo!

Also, Storm's costume no longer seems new to me, just looks like a well established perfect fit.
